Class: Main Battle Tank (Prototype)Developed: 1990-1991Service: N/AVehicles Built: 1Operators: N/AThe Type 90-II Chinese Main Battle Tank prototype is a rather interesting piece of Chinese machinery, built, unlike many of the previous Chinese vehicles, from scratch instead of by upgrading some older, obsolete design. For one, the Type 90 MBT was not an evolution of the Type 85, although it used the same weapon system. It was basically a new attempt for a third generation tank based on the lessons learned from a T-72 that the Chinese had acquired earlier in the 1980s from Romania. While the whole vehicle had the typical Chinese shapes of the late 1980s and 1990s (when China moved away from the classic cast turrets and replaced them with welded ones), the suspension is different from that of the Type 85 series and can be traced back to the abovementioned T-72.Secondly, the Type 90 was built for export, specifically to Pakistan. In other words, it was not designed as a third generation MBT for Chinese use, that role eventually fell to Type 96 and Type 99 MBTs. The 1991 Type 90-II prototype, developed by NORINCO, weighed 48 tons and had a crew of three. It was basically a mash-up of older Chinese technologies from Type 80 and Type 85 MBTs and Soviet upgrades. It was armed with a copy of the Soviet 125mm 2A46 smoothbore called Type 83. Some sources claim that the vehicle could also fire gun-launched guided missiles, specifically a copy of the Soviet 9K119 Refleks system. The base armor of the vehicle was from steel but layers of composite were added to the turret and hull front. The exact protection levels are not known but are assumed to be roughly the same as a base T-72 model. The engine choice was somewhat unique. Instead of powering their new creation with a standard Chinese engine of the era, the Chinese offered a wide scale of imported engines and transmissions for the vehicle with the baseline being the Ukrainian 6TD diesel from Kharkov producing some 1200hp.The Pakistanis apparently didn’t like first prototype all too much but, instead, became more involved in the vehicle development, which eventually led to an improved version called Type 90-IIM, more commonly known under the name MBT-2000. Pakistan purchased and mass-produced MBT-2000 from 2001 under the name of Al-Khalid but this MBT is so different from the original Type 90-II that it cannot be counted as a variant thereof. While several hundred MBT-2000s were produced, the Type 90-II itself remained a prototype vehicle only.

Gameplay[]

When the matchmaking system successfully finds enough players for a game, the map begins to load while a loading screen displays the composition of each team for the upcoming battle. A 30-second countdown will start when eighty percent of all players have successfully loaded the map. When all players are present while the countdown is still active, the timer will switch to 3 seconds before starting the battle.

Objective

The objective for both teams is to destroy all opponents’ vehicles, or to capture a control point (also known as «base»). The location of control point to capture depends on the subtype of standard PvP match played.

  • Standard — Each team holds one control point, and the goal is to capture the enemy’s control point on the other side of the map.
  • Encounter — There is one neutral control point located around the center of the map, and both teams should fight for its control.

Mechanics

Standard PvP mode is considered a team deathmatch; there is no respawn available for all players, therefore a vehicle that has been destroyed in-game will remain unplayable until the end of a match. Each battle has a 15-minute time limit. Within that limit one team has to win or lose, otherwise the battle will be declared a draw with reduced rewards for both teams.

In situations where the matchmaker cannot create full-scale teams larger in a timely manner, players in a queue will be placed into a Skirmish match, which features fewer players in a match-up on a reduced size map.

Rewards

When a mission ends, players are presented with a debriefing screen with the battle result. Experience and are rewarded based on the players’ individual performance. The winning team receives higher rewards than the losing team, but players on the losing team who have performed well can also gain substantial rewards.

Players can also earn Epic Medals by fulfilling specific requirements in a PvP match. Earning multiple Epic Medals in a single match can also reward the player with decorative Mastery Flags for the vehicle that participated in the said match.

Player Recommendations[]

Play with this tank Hull down according to the new armor calculator the frontal arc of the tank can be penetrated very easily at close range at 30 m the penetration of an armor piercing round is that mid to lower 70%. While at 1,000 meters it goes down from 75 or 76% to about 18%. Distance is key but this tank so it might be good as a short to mid-range sniper. So remember to keep your distance from the enemy and you won’t take damage, the closer you are to the enemy the more the penetration is likely.

Cons

  • speed lost in turns
  • Stock Ammo
  • Frontal armor can be pened at close range(See armor Calculator for more details)

Class: Main Battle Tank (Prototype)Developed: 2015-2016Service: 2016+Vehicles Built: cca 12 (sources vary, some claim as many as 200)Operators: ChinaThe Type 96B MBT is an upgraded variant of the Type 96A. Even though both vehicles look roughly similar in shape, the Type 96B has a number of upgrades. It allegedly has improved frontal armor, equal to the newer Type 99 models. The turret also features new elements such as a different, laser rangefinder above the gun, new gun optics and a new weather sensor at the back of the turret. These changes are connected to the presence of a new, more advanced fire control system for the 125mm smoothbore gun, making it more accurate compared to its predecessor and decreasing its reaction time. It only takes roughly 6 seconds from the discovery of the target to the first shot. The vehicle is also rumored to use brand-new APFSDS shells, capable of penetrating more than 700mm of armor at 2km. The engine part of the vehicle has also been overhauled. The original 730hp turbocharged diesel engine of the Type 96A was changed to a smaller but more powerful 150HB 8-cylinder diesel, rumored to produce anywhere between 1000hp and 1300hp. Many other smaller improvements are also present. The Type 96B appeared in public for the first time in 2016 when it participated in the annual Tank Biathlon contest on the Alabino polygon in Russia. The event took place in July and August 2016 and China won the second place with the Type 96B and its crew only defeated by the Russian team. Not much else is known about this new Type 96 variant, nor are there any announced plans for the Chinese military to convert its fleet of Type 96A tanks into Type 96Bs. According to some Chinese sources, the Chinese military isn’t really happy with the tank and the development of the Type 96 platform will continue.

History[]

Tank Destroyers are vehicles specifically designed to kill enemy tanks on a budget, whether designed from scratch or converted from another existing vehicle. Their battlefield role was to engage the enemy at long distances and to maneuver shortly after to avoid return fire. The Tank Destroyer class saw its golden days during the Second World War, where various vehicles were devised to fight enemy tanks while being relatively cheap to produce. Many of these wartime vehicles used existing chasses fitted with a more powerful gun than such a vehicle would normally carry mounted in the hull, where it could only aim forward in a certain traverse. There were exceptions, such as the American M36 and M18, which were more or less very poorly armored tanks.

After the war, the Tank Destroyer class was rapidly replaced by a universal combat vehicle – the Main Battle Tank. Few post-war gun Tank Destroyer designs achieved any significance, some of them being the German Kanonenjagdpanzer, Swiss Taifun II, and Russian SU-152 Taran. In the 1960’s, with the rise of special vehicles armed mostly with anti-tank guided missiles, such as the German Raketenjagdpanzer or British FV438 Swingfire, the Tank Destroyer class begun to branch out from its Second World War roots. Universal fire platforms such as the M1128 MGS and Sprut-SD begun to appear, which were mostly designed to provide fire support for infantry and lightly armed vehicles but could engage and destroy older enemy MBTs if required. One of the more unusual branch of modern hybrid class vehicles is the Russian BMPT-series, otherwise known as Terminators.

Class: Main Battle TankDeveloped: 1968-1976Service: 1976-1990sVehicles Built: cca 250Operators: Soviet UnionWhile not as iconic as the ubiquitous T-72, the T-80 Main Battle Tank was an important part of the Soviet war machine. Even though the two tanks share typical Russian tank looks to the point that they look the same to a layman’s eye, they are two different beasts entirely. After all, unlike the T-72, the T-80 was intended for Soviet use only and was only issued to elite units. In the 1960s, the Soviets were undisputed leaders in tank technology. No mass-produced western tank could match the armor and firepower of the T-64. The Soviets, however, realized that a response from NATO would not be that far away, leading them to develop something even better. One way to achieve that was to significantly improve tank mobility by introducing a new type of engine to Soviet tank forces, a gas turbine. The origins of the T-80 can be traced back to the Kharkov-built T-64T prototype from 1963, equipped with a turbine engine. It took more than half a decade to find appropriate solutions to these issues. On April 16, 1968, the SKB-2 design bureau of the Kirov Plant in Leningrad was tasked by the USSR government with building an improved T-64 variant and one of the requirements was for it to have a turbine engine. This resulted in a prototype called Object 219SP1 from 1969. Further improvements to both mobility and other combat characteristics were needed, resulting in a prototype designated Object 219SP2. The vehicle kept the T-64A 125mm gun and its automatic loader mechanism, but the suspension was overhauled. Around 127 early Object 219SP2 pre-series vehicles were built and thoroughly tested. The process took nearly seven long years, before the vehicle was accepted into service on June 6, 1976 under the designation of T-80.The original T-80 was produced by the Kirov Plant between 1976 and 1978 and with approximately 250 built, it became the world’s first mass-produced tank powered by a gas turbine. Thanks to its new individual torsion bar suspension, which resembled the T-72 more than the T-64A, and its modified turret, western militaries at first confused the T-80 with the T-72, to which it was superior. This early model was never exported and opart from some minor engagements during the breakup of the Soviet Union, the first and only major combat use of the T-80 tanks happened during the First Chechen War.

Class: Light Tank (Prototype)Developed: 2006-2010Service: N/AVehicles Built: cca 10Operators: N/AOne of the better known modern Chinese Light Tanks is the VT-5 by NORINCO. As its name suggests, the vehicle was released for export (the VT designation is used for export vehicles) and has been marketed as such ever since its 2010. The development was kept in secrecy, but some sources claim it started around 2006 or so. The design actually comes from a contest for China’s future Light Tank and the VT-5 was the loser with the winner entering the actual Chinese service under the name ZTQ-15 (or Type 15 Light Tank). The VT-5 is a typical Light Tank. Its weight is in the low 30 ton category and its level of protection is comparable to modern heavy IFVs. The basic hull is made of steel but the vehicle can be upgraded with either a composite applique armor kit, or an ERA kit that covers its sides. Thanks to its excellent power-to-weight ratio, it is a very mobile and agile tank, making up with speed what it lacks in protection. The engine can also be configured for high-altitude low-oxygen environments of mountain ranges, giving it a distinct advantage over conventional MBTs that cannot be generally operated in such environments. The tank has a crew of three as it doesn’t need a loader. Its main weapon, 105mm rifled cannon, is loaded automatically from a turret bustle-mounted ammunition rack. The last major event that included this vehicle was the August 2017 Inner Mongolia event where it was shown, along with a number of other advanced Chinese export weapons, to the representatives of more than 50 countries. The Chinese spared no expense on the event and the military experts could also witness the tank in action and during firing trials. According to several sources, the vehicle made a good impression but whether it will also attract any real customers remains to be seen. It is, however, not going to appear in the Chinese army.

History[]

Class: Main Battle TankDeveloped: 1958-1959Service: 1959-1960s (2014 in Israel)Vehicles Built: 2205Operators: USA, IsraelThe Patton series of universal tanks is as important to the United States military as the T-54/55 series was to the Soviets and formed the backbone of the American armored forces from the late 1940s practically until the 1990s. Having evolved from the M26 Pershing Medium Tank, the Patton family was named after George S. Patton, one of the most famous U.S. generals to have ever lived. Right until their final versions, the Patton series tanks were protected only by their steel armor and used 90mm and 105mm rifled guns. The M60 series development began with the need to upgrade the M48 tank series in two areas, increasing the firepower and the operational range of the vehicle. One idea to do the latter was to replace the older, fuel-thirsty AV-1790 series gasoline engine with a diesel. The first supercharged AVDS-1790 diesel prototype was tested successfully in 1957 with fuel economy improving by a whopping 60 percent. On the firepower side, it was decided to go with the T254E2 105mm rifled gun (hat came from the earlier the T95 program, giving it the official M68 designation (contrary to popular belief, the M68 is not a version of the Royal Ordnance L7 gun). In March 1959, the vehicle received its standard military designation: 105mm Gun Full Tracked Combat Tank M60. Four prototypes were built between July and October 1959 and submitted to series of tests, which were passed successfully. After that, it was considered fit for troop use, although the first 15 tanks (as well as the prototypes) did not have sufficient ballistic protection and were set aside for training only. The first 360 M60 tanks were built in the Chrysler plant in Delaware. After that, production was moved to Detroit Tank Arsenal, where it continued until October 1962. The total number of the initial M60 model produced was 2205 vehicles. After October 1962, production was switched to a more advanced model — the M60A1. The early M60s were only used by the U.S. Army. They were deployed in Europe from December 1960. Between 1971 and 1973, Israel obtained a number of M60 and M60A1 Main Battle Tanks from the USA and used them under the name of Magach. The M60 MBT was designated Magach 6 was and was later upgraded to Magach 7, which would serve until 2014. By that time, however, few original components remained of the venerable M60.

Series 6.

Player Recommendations[]

This vehicle is best played as a hull down support vehicle taking cover behind a rock, wreck, hill, or other position where only its well armored turret is exposed to incoming fire. Failing that, it can be a second line MBT capitalizing on firepower and agility, the latter to avoid incoming fire with the help of smoke grenades. The hull is weak and vulnerable, and any hits are best taken on the turret.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Premium vehicle, so additional credit and reputation generation.
  • Tier 8 armor on the turret, along with great gun depression
  • Has better AP ammo than an upgraded M1A2, giving it outstanding firepower at tier 7
  • Agile and nimble for an MBT
  • Compared to the Sabra Mk. 2, it has better camo, higher DPM, better traverse speeds, and a higher top speed.

Cons

  • Weak hull armor for its tier. Even lower tiered vehicles might frontally penetrate it.
  • In comparison, the Sabra Mk. 2 has better penetration, accuracy, acceleration, view range, and has ERA.
  • Only available in the Collector’s Edition bundles
  • Commander: Phillip Holzklau
  • Driver: Off-road Driving, Spin to Win
  • Loader: Rapid Fire, Explosive Shells
  • Gunner: Sharpshooter, Do the Twist

Entering a battle[]

Joining a PvE match.

Players can enter a PvE matchmaking queue by selecting a vehicle that they own or an active rental vehicle then select a mission under the Co-Op Missions tab on the HQ screen. Alternatively, clicking the «Action!» button on top of any screens will have the same effect; the game will remember the difficulty option they last played when queuing under this way.

Mission selection and queues are separated not only by difficulty options, but also by Tier pools. Standard PvE missions are split into Tiers 1 to 3, Tiers 4 to 6, and Tiers 7 to 10. Special Operations are split into Tiers 4 to 8 and Tiers 9 to 10.

When entering a queue with a platoon. The Tier difference across all players’ vehicles must not exceed 1. For example, it is permissible to have Tiers 4 and 5 in platoon, but Tiers 3 or 6 in addition to Tiers 4 and 5 are not allowed.

Player Recommendations[]

As a self-propelled gun, the M108 is best used as a support vehicle for helping the team progress by removing heavily armored targets such as MBTs from the battle. Teamwork is needed for those both working with and playing an SPG. Teammates should be asked to call out targets if they are in trouble, and front-line vehicles should be supported in the battle.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Splash radius around shell, useful for resetting base capture
  • More accurate than higher caliber artillery
  • Decent mobility

Cons

  • Long reload and aiming time
  • Weak armor
  • Dependent on other vehicles for spotting

Upgrade Suggestions

As the upgrades are very limited and are only marginally effective for the purpose of the vehicle, the Improved Tracks and Upgraded Exhaust Smoke are recommended, but not vital.

  • Commander: Freja Hojbjerg, for improvements to aim speed and overall accuracy

Player Recommendations[]

The last of the standard variants of the M1 Abrams platform available in Armored Warfare, the M1A2C Abrams continues the pattern of high mobility and excellent protection the series is known for. While the Abrams’ firepower may not be the best of its tier, its speed and armor allow the it to perform as an excellent flanker, strong hull down defender, and decent brawler.

Cons

  • Poor stock DPM
  • Abysmal stock acceleration

Upgrading to the AGT-1500 Tiger Gas Turbine Engine, Soft Kill APS, and TUSK v.3 ERA armor kit early will enhance the already good mobility and armor protection.  Although important, firepower upgrades should be focused on later, due to their high cost and marginal improvement to gun capability.

Player Recommendations[]

Featuring the devastating firepower characteristic of Russian MBTs, the T-90A is mobile, powerful, and deadly. With the highest damage potential of any tier 8 MBT, alongside excellent mobility in rough terrain, the T-90A is perfectly made for flanking and brawling. Attacking more armored MBTs from the side and rear is the specialty of the T-90A, which when used properly makes it one of the most dangerous vehicles on the battlefield.

Cons

  • Poor hull armor
  • Very poor gun depression

Upgrade Suggestions

Upgrading to the V-92S2F Diesel Engine will greatly improve the mobility of the T-90A, so this should be researched as early as possible to improve the flanking capability of the vehicle. Firepower upgrades such as ammunition and modules are important in the long run, but should not be focused early due to their high research cost relative to mobility and protection upgrades.

Player Recommendations[]

The first of a line of modular upgrades to the T-72 platform, the T-72A continues the trend of heavy hitting firepower the T series is known for. With high DPM and good upgraded mobility, it is a strong brawler and hull down warrior when it can fight on open ground. But with a mediocre stock top speed and acceleration and poor gun depression, this vehicle is one of the harder Russian MBTs to play compared to the T-80 and T-64 mod. 1975.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • High alpha
  • Excellent turret armor
  • Armor upgrade gives some protection against HEAT and guided missiles through ERA along the front half of the sides, turret front and hull front

Cons

  • Poor hull armor
  • Poor gun depression
  • Mediocre stock top speed and acceleration

Upgrade Suggestions

Upgrading to the V-84 Diesel Engine will greatly improve the poor stock mobility of the T-72A, so this should be researched as early as possible. Upgrading to the Kontakt-1 ERA offers heavily improved protection from ATGMs and HEAT shells. Firepower upgrades such as ammunition and modules are important in the long run, but should not be focused early due to their high research cost relative to mobility and protection upgrades.

Player Recommendations[]

Continuing the legacy of the M1 Abrams, the M1A2 is a modernized variant featuring increased firepower and protection. While not as mobile as the M1 Abrams, it compensates with much more effective protection against HEAT ammunition, and a more powerful gun. A jack of all trades, the M1A2’s excellent combination of firepower, mobility, and protection makes it a very capable flanker and brawler.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excellent gun depression
  • Excellent frontal armor with the armor upgrade can even withstand Tier 10 ATGM fire
  • ERA protection against HEAT

Cons

  • Poor stock DPM
  • Soft kill APS is somewhat useless, because higher tier ATGMs can’t be easily blocked.

Upgrade Suggestions

Like the M1A1, the M1A2 Abrams has a significant number of armor upgrades which should be researched early to improve protection. Unlocking the Soft Kill APS improves protection against the significant threat of ATGM fire.  Upgrades to the firepower slightly improve gun capability, but unless a player is finding stock firepower to be insufficient, it should be researched later.
