Non-playable Ships[]

Player Crews can also encounter Ships helmed by NPCs in-game. There are two types of NPC ships: Skeleton Ships and Ghost Ships.

Skeleton Ships

Skeleton Ships can be encountered as Sloops or Galleons, signified by their worn out Sails and Blue and Green Lanterns. These Ships are hostile when attacked or approached and carry various Treasure items on board. Skeleton Ships can use a single random type of Cursed Cannonball. Skeleton Ships can either be encountered roaming Solo, or as part of Skeleton Fleet World Events. Skeleton Ships will play a spooky sounding musical sting when viewed through an eyeglass.

Ghost Ships

Ghost Ships only appear in groups as Galleons. Ghost Ships come in the Grunt Ship variant (similar in appearance to Skeleton Ships) and Ghost Captain Ships (with coloured full Sails and Pennant Flags). These Ships follow a circular trajectory around Large Islands and attack once enemies get in their Cannon range. Ghost Ships use Ghostly Cannonballs. Ghost Ships are encountered as a part of Ghost Ship Voyages or the Ghost Fleet World Event.

Game Modes[]

There are currently two different Game Modes in the Sea of Thieves: Adventure Mode and The Arena.

Adventure Mode

Main article: Adventure Mode

The Adventure Mode is your traditional Sea of Thieves experience, placing your Player Pirate and their Crew and Ship in one of the many Outposts in the titular Sea of Thieves, leaving you to find your own Adventures, by either following the Story mode of Tall Tales, going on Bilge Rats time-limited or permanent Adventures or earning Gold, Reputation and Commendations with the five main Trading Companies: Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, Merchant Alliance, The Hunter’s Call and the Legendary Athena’s Fortune. Up to six Crews of up to four pirates can populate a single Adventure mode Server.

The Arena

Main article: The Arena

The Arena game-mode is focused for those who want to enjoy a more Structured Player versus Player experience, pitting up to five Crews against each other at the Sea Dogs Arena. The Glorious Sea Dogs are the sixth Trading Company that only offer Gold, Reputation and Commendations in the Arena game-mode. Arena Matches consist of 15 minute battles in various small circular areas inside the Sea of Thieves for the same X-Marks-The-Spot Treasure Maps hiding Sea Dog Chests that need to be battled for and sold to Sea Dog Agents on specific Sea Posts.

Summary[]

The crew will be given a Trade Route Map charting the route taken by a lost Merchant galleon. The objective of the mission is to follow the path, retracing the lost ship’s journey. Along the way are various clue sites from the merchant vessel:

  • Merchant Barrels of Plenty: Several normal barrels with a Merchant Barrel among the normal barrels that contains a clue, often a Ship Log. These can be located by watching for flocks of seagulls circling overhead.
  • A clue in a bottle floating in the water.
  • A washed-up wreckage on an island or fort beach that contains a clue in a bottle.
  • An island (or seapost) NPC that can provide a clue.

At all of these sites, there may be leftover Trade Good Crates, but only one of these sites contains the Captain’s Key, which will unlock the Captain’s Quarters onboard the sunken ship.

Near the trade shipment’s calculated destination, there will be a shipwreck with an intact (immobile and neutral) skeleton corpse cradling a Merchant Manifest. The voyage completes once the manifest is retrieved, and all clue sites will despawn, including the Captain’s Key if it has not been obtained.

  • Golden Sands to The Finest Trading Post
  • Sanctuary Outpost to Galleon’s Grave Outpost

Operation[]

To mobilize the ship, the anchor must be raised and the sails unfurled. Careful Sailing will generate maximum speed or turning finesse.

When the ship suffers damage, it must be patched with Wooden Planks. If the hull is punctured with holes, the lower deck will start to flood, and must be bailed out with the Bucket. The ship will sink when it is completely flooded, disabling all ship equipment. The holes can vary in size, which affects the repair time. The other components can be damaged to reduce functionality: the mast, capstan, and helm.

Naval Combat is often fought with Cannons or Boarding enemy ships.

Components[]

Equipment

Most ships will Spawn with the following Features:

  • Bell: Located at the doorway to the Captain’s Quarters. Can be rung to get the attention of the crew or other nearby Ships.
  • Brig: A jail cell where a misbehaving player can be locked up (or released) via crew vote.
  • Cannons: A Ship’s mounted weapons. Fires cannonballs, players, and pets.
  • Capstan: A Ship’s Anchor control. Stops the ship when lowered. Raising takes time and manpower.
  • Compass: Every ship has a stationary Compass next to the Wheel.
  • Crow’s Nest: A lookout tower at the top of the main mast, accessible via ladder.
  • Ship Flag Box: A box on top of the Crow’s Nest that allows your crew to change their flag.
  • Grog Barrel: Every ship is equipped with their own supply of booze for long and dreary voyages.
  • Harpoon: Located near the front of the ship, can be used to latch onto surfaces, ships, Megalodons, and other enemies, or to pull players or treasure onto the ship.
  • Hatches: Interactive hatches on some windows of ships, can be closed to help defend against cannon balls.
  • Helm: A wheel that steers the ship. A golden handle marks the neutral position, along with an audible ‘thunk.’
  • Lanterns: Ships are equipped with several Lanterns, both above and below deck, which provide light and cause a Ship to be more visible from a distance. They can be switched on or off individually by players.
  • Sails: Operated with Sail Length Cleats and Sail Angle Pulleys. Masts can take damage from Cannonballs and Fire.
  • Map Table: An interactive map of The Sea of Thieves used for navigation.
  • Voyage Table: A table to vote and cancel voyages and Tall Tales.
  • Stove: Used to cook Food
  • Rowboat Dock: A rowboat can be found close to islands or ashore, and can be hung on the back of every ship by rowing it directly behind a ship. A rowboat can be used for transporting treasure, storing Supplies or saving everything on a sinking ship. Note that there are certain rowboats that have harpoons on them.
  • Sails: Uses wind to move the ship, can be adjusted in length and angle to control speed depending on wind.
  • Water Barrel: Pumps seawater from the Sea with a lever mechanism. Useful for dealing with Fires.
  • Pet Cage: A sizeable Cage that can be opened from the Latch for Pets to be placed in.
  • Ladders: on the sides and main mast of every Ship. Used to climb on board and up and down the Crow’s Nest.
  • Emissary Flags: Raised and lowered at Emissary Tables on Outposts. Used to Represent a Trading Company on the Seas as an Emissary for increased Gold and Reputation gains.
  • Alliance Pennant: Raised and lowered at the Ship Flag Box. Used to form Player Alliances with other Ships for shared Gold and Reputation.

Player resources

In addition to tools related to navigating the seas, the following Containers are also available on every Ship:

  • Ammo Chest: Provides unlimited refills of all of a player’s carried firearm ammo.
  • Armoury: Swaps a player’s equipped Weapons.
  • Barrels: Holds respective consumable items (Food, Wooden Planks, Cannonballs), up to 4800 per Barrel.
  • Clothing Chest: Swaps a player’s equipped Clothing.
  • Equipment Chest: Swaps a player’s equipped Equipment.
  • Vanity Chest: Swaps a player’s equipped Vanity items.
  • Pet Chest: Swaps a player’s Pets and their Pet Outfits.

Notes[]

  • It is not required to locate all clues to find the shipwreck.
  • The shipwreck and its cargo will remain after the voyage is complete.
  • The Wilds is not an ideal environment to embark on this voyage. The area has darker lighting, making it harder to see the flocks of seagulls of the shipwreck and barrels.
  • It is possible for the Manifest to be found floating on the surface instead of on a shipwreck. If this occurs, the shipwreck may be located elsewhere, or may not exist at all due to a bug in the game. Picking up the Manifest causes all clue sites to despawn, which may make finding the shipwreck difficult or impossible. So consider carefully before picking up the Manifest in this situation.

Skeleton Fort World Event[]

Main article: Skeleton Fort

Every now and then, one Fort can become manned by a crew of Skeletons who hide their Stronghold Treasure in the Fortress Vault. An active fort is indicated by a large thunder cloud in the shape of a Skull with green eyes. During this World Event, any Player Crews approaching the Island will be shot by Skeletons using the Island’s Cannons. Players will encounter 12 waves of Skeletons on the active Fort Island itself. There are three more «boss» waves, spawning a Skeleton Captain, an Ashen Guardian and Ashen Key Master and finally a Skeleton Lord. The Lord will drop a Stronghold Key that opens the locked Fortress Vault below the main structure.

Sudd’s Journals[]

CLICK FOR JOURNALS

The North Star Guides You

(Eastern islet, Rum Runner Isle)

Sudds met a young whippersnapper today. Green as leaves, he was. He hadn’t even heard of the North Star! You don’t need no spyglass to find her, Sudds told the lad, she’s the biggest and brightest friend and she likes to stay put. Spot the North Star and you’ll never need a compass again! And the boy smiled, and asked Sudds: «What if it’s raining?» Sudds gave the lad a thick ear. Busy, too busy for foolish questions! Gots to reach ol’ Plunder by nightfall…

The Little Glimmer Fish

(Highest peak, Plunder Valley)

Brave little Glimmer Fish… He used to swim down here in the water with all of his brothers and sisters, shining in the sun. Sometimes it’s not wise to shine too brightly… Bigger fish came with empty bellies, and their teeth went snicker-snack! Soon Glimmer Fish was the only one left to guide the ancient ones on their journey here. One brave little light, all alone… The ancients felt sorry for Glimmer Fish and placed him in the heavens where he could swim in safety. Lucky little fishy! Now Sudds must swim along too, all the way to the shores named after the sneaky snake…

Snake Gets What He Deserves

(Mainland, Snake Island)

Snake has many voices and likes to play tricks. He coiled along a branch and waited until the Great Warrior was near. «Help me!» came the Sea Queen’s cry, «Won’t someone help me, for wicked One-Eye has me by the tail!» Warrior heard it all. Warrior ran through the trees, not looking up above his head, and whump! There came Singing Snake to coil around his throat. Snake is cunning, but Warrior is strong! He grabbed at Snake and hurled him up into the stars, where he has lived ever since! Sudds can’t get a good view from here. Needs to sail out to Old Harry’s place before daybreak…

The War that Shook the Sky

(Northeast rock, Devil’s Ridge)

There was once a great battle that shook the whole heavens, and caused great sadness to Sudds’s friends above. Great Warrior knew that he would have to battle Old Kraken, for she planed to feast on the merfolk and their kin. To fletch the arrows he would need, Warrior told Proud Eagle to give up eight of his feathers, or they would go to war. Eagle refused, of course, and tore at Warrior with his sharp talons, but it was no use. Warrior fled with his golden prizes! He dropped one feather as he fell back to earth, and it’s still in the stars! Sudds wants to see it from the moon-shaped isle…

The Binding of the Kraken

(Southwest rocks, Crescent Isle)

Great Warrior took his arrows and went to make war with Kraken, but he had lost a feather along the way. He thought of Singing Snake and the venom it used to bite, and he tipped each of his arrows with the very same. The arrows stung the Old Mother and made her sleepy, so that she sank down to the sea bed. Warrior gave out a great cry. The ancients came, then, with their great chains. Together they bound Kraken rightly to the star above, far out of reach. The Sea Queen was grateful, for her people were saved, and she promised they would always help those lost at sea.

Rewards[]

The Rewards of the Ghost Fleet can vary, depending on how many Grunt Ships dropped Storage Crates of the Damned and how many Ashen Dragon Ships the Crews took down.

Each Ashen Dragon Ship will drop:

  • 7-9 pieces of Ghostly Treasure, which include:
    • Ashes of the Damned
    • Skulls of the Damned
    • Chests of the Damned
    • A potential single Storage Crate of the Damned

The Burning Blade itself will drop:

  • 15 pieces of regular Ghostly Treasure
  • 1 Captain Skull of the Damned
  • 1 Cannonball Crate of the Damned

The Cannonball Crate of the Damned is the only way to acquire Ghostly Cannonballs for your own use. The Wraith Cannonballs found inside are like miniature projectile Gunpowder Kegs that leave more than 1 hole of Hull damage and knocks back the victim’s ship on impact.

The Ghostly Crates can be sold to the Merchant Alliance, the Skulls to the Order of Souls and the Chests to the Gold Hoarders, or they can all be sold to the Reaper’s Bones instead.
