«Flaming Pillars»
Element: (+Fire DoT effect)
Max Hits: 1 per upgrade level (max 7)
Damage/Hit: Base Magic Damage x 0.5
Flame bursts up from the ground in front of you. Each upgrade level adds another burst of flame in front of the previous ones, up to a total of seven. This is more powerful, or about as powerful, than the Thorny Vines Splash Attack because it nearly has the same amount of hits at the same speed with damage over time. It’s a great boss slaying splash attack, and it’s very useful for heavy enemies, who take normal knockback from all fire based attacks.
The second most powerful Splash Attack in the game.
«Fireball»
Element: (+Fire DoT effect)
Damage: Base Magic Damage
A ball of fire trailing orange smoke. The Fire DoT effect adds a nice bonus, with the downside being the Fire element itself, meaning some enemies will resist it. Equivalent to Orange Knight’s «Fireball» Magic Projectile.
«Fireball»
Element: (+Fire DoT effect)
Damage: Base Magic Damage
A ball of fire trailing orange smoke. The fire DoT effect adds a nice bonus, with the downside being the fire element itself, meaning some enemies will resist it. Equivalent to Orange Knight’s «Fireball» Air Projectile. An advanced use of Juggling, named Spellweaving, can use this Air Projectile for flashy techniques.
«Flame Engulfment»
Element: (+Fire DoT effect)
Damage: Base Magic Damage + Base Melee Damage
Use / to perform. Engulfs enemies in flames, with a nice hit of Damage over Time. Combined with the large amount of enemies with weaknesses to fire, this combo can be very powerful.
«Pillar of Flame»
Element: (+Fire DoT effect)
Damage: Base Magic Damage
Leaps up with yellow and orange flame billowing out below, lighting enemies on fire. Equivalent to Orange Knight’s «Fire Rise» Magic Jump.
Trivia
- There are a total of 25 Stove Faces to fight in both Normal Mode and Insane Mode.
- On Insane Mode, NPC Stove Faces can Critical Strike for a whopping 970-999 damage with the Gladiator Sword.
- Stove Face holds the title of having the most health of all normal sized enemies. He has 400 health on Normal Mode and 4,000 health on Insane Mode.
- In Full Moon, It is actually a Beefy Stove Face throwing the rocks down the mountain as you can see it in a throwing position for a split second. The Stove Face also glitches out for a bit showing a regular Stove Face before reverting back into a Beefy.
- Stove Face and Killer Beekeeper
However, the enemy Stove Faces only appear in Full Moon; while dead bodies of Killer Beekeepers can be seen in the Necromancer’s Room sublevel in the Wizard Castle Interior level.
are the only playable enemies in the entire game that appear in only one level to fight in.
- Stove Face can be resurrected by the Necromancer in Lava World as a Skeleton. But that could also be Conehead since they got the same armor and sword.
- Since Stove Face’s starting weapon is the Gladiator Sword, he, at Level 1, can switch to a different weapon and switch back to the Gladiator Sword.
- NPC Stove Faces are the heaviest characters in the game and cannot be juggled through conventional means.
- Stove Faces are the only characters who appear once in the entire game. This makes sense because at the end of the game during the credits and during the Necromancer fight, no dead bodies of stove faces were shown.
Walkthrough
Introduction
Enter the castle, you need to use a Sandwich to become a Beefy and break down the door. A sandwich can be obtained in Lava World or purchased from the Volcano Store. Use the sandwich to become «Beefy», then rip off the metal door by repeatedly tapping /. You can come to the castle early but, without a sandwich, the Industrial Prince will stand on an above balcony and mock you. Likewise in Insane Mode.
Industrial Castle Interior
Wave 1: 4 Fencers.Wave 2: 2 Industrialists, 2 Fencers.
Once inside, you will meet two waves of Fencers and Industrialists. Then you will encounter three mechanical obstacles in immediate succession. The first obstacle is a row of cannons incessantly firing acid balls at you. Your safest bet is to block these projectiles with your shield ( / ) as you slowly advance forward; however, you can jump over these projectiles with a little practice to save some time. Proceed up the ramp and you will come to the second obstacle which is a narrow path with large weights on chains that rhythmically rise and fall in an attempt to smash you. Timing through this is fairly easy: quickly step underneath the next weight as it rises, and repeat. You won’t get caught under the previous weight if you always move at your first opportunity. The third obstacle is a row of electric barriers that rhythmically flicker on and off. (You can use a Sandwich to get through here quickly.)You have room between each barrier to stand safely, so take your time advancing through each barrier one at a time.
Focusing on two route
Wave 3: 12 Fencers.Wave 4: 2 Fencers, 2 Industrialists.
After passing the mechanical obstacles, you are drawn onto a moving elevator. You will be confronted with 12 total Fencers while the elevator continues to rise. Once you defeat all of them, the elevator will come to a halt and you can continue forward.
Wave 5: 1 Brute, 2 Fencers.
A heavyweight Beefy in Brute that possesses an Animal Orb, the Cardinal. Defeat him to claim his Cardinal. The two boxes in that area have a fruit and a drumstick.
Focusing on sixteen route
If you did not decide to immediately kill the last two Fencers in the elevator via lightweight juggling the rest, then pull them along with the Fencers and Industrialists.
Wave 3: 14 Fencers. 2 Industrialists.Wave 4: 1 Brute, 2 Fencers.
Walkthrough
After breaking through a window in the Flowery Field level, you and the other Gray Knights will fall through the window and land in the middle of a wedding. The player(s) will land safely on the cake, but the gray knights will die on contact.
The Conehead Groom will rush the Green Princess out of the scene, and the other Coneheads will begin attacking you:
- Wave 1: 5 Coneheads; 2 will be there the moment you arrive, while the other 3 move out from behind pillars when the player moves to the right.
- Wave 2: 5 Coneheads. All of them move from behind pillars.
During Waves 1-2, Tables will lie next to the pillars with food and Gold on them. Players can use these by attacking the tables in order to obtain the items.
- Wave 3: 2 Coneheads; One crashes through a window, while the other approaches from the right.
- Wave 4: 3 Coneheads; 2 crash through windows, while the other approaches from the right.
When moving to the right, the Groom and an unhappy Green Princess can be seen next to a pipe organ with cannons instead of pipes. The Groom, noticing the player, engages in the fight against them while the Green Princess cheers on the player from the side.
Conehead Groom
- Main article: Conehead Groom
It is recommended that you pin the Groom with heavy attacks () as this does the most damage possible to him. Watch out for his twirling attack as it is extremely deadly. When he hops on the organ and plays you’ll need to avoid the target markers on the ground. Move around and watch your feet. Also, keep an eye on the evil Groom as you want to start attacking as soon as he hops back off from the organ. Again, try to pin him to the ground with heavy attacks (). He’ll hop back on the organ and the next barrage of cannon balls will be a lot faster. Keep moving to avoid being hit and repeat the process until he’s been defeated. Also, if you are the Ice Knight, you can spam your magic ice bullet () and keep freezing him to the left, which is a cheap way to win, but you won’t take nearly as much damage as if you did the strong attack (). This will actually work for any character if their magic is high enough. Simply use the projectile magic to continually knock him down, which makes it very easy.
Once the Groom dies, the Cyclops (widely speculated to be the Groom’s father) will come out of a nearby bathroom. Once he sees the dead Conehead Groom, he cries due to the death of the Conehead Groom, then grabs him and the Green Princess, and slams through a door to get to the carriage. The Parade level then starts.

Overview
Thief’s respective «Arrow Rain» Splash Attack and «Knife» Magic Projectile and Air Projectile make him a member of the fan nicknamed «Arrow Rainers». Bland and common characters that show off nothing special at all. These are considered to be the gold standard for Castle Crashers, as they are painfully below average and are not unique, unlike the characters below them. These are the aforementioned Thief, Stove Face, Peasant, Civilian, and Open-Faced Gray Knight.
Castle Crashers
Below average character because of their splash being delayed enemies can often just slip through without getting hit. It’s bad in almost every situation you use it in. The only notable use is stunning beefies in order to start juggles.

Gold and XP Exploit
When the XP Boomerang glitch was patched in both the older and later versions of Castle Crashers, this boss has often been used to get XP on characters by spamming the Splash Attack/Level 50 Combo each time he gets down from his scaffold. The Painter drops around 300-400 gold per defeat and, thanks to the Splash Attack/Level 50 Combo of a character hitting him multiple times, the player can get a very high amount of XP on this boss alone. After defeating him, the player can just come back from where they came into the room and repeat.
Depending on the character choice, this process obviously goes by substantially faster. The quickest way being to use the Fencer or Industrialist and spamming the Splash Attack until the Painter dies. Clocking in at about ~10 seconds to kill on Normal Mode.
Trivia
- Fire Demon’s Back Off Barbarian sprite looks very different from his in-game character.
- If the player beats Industrial Castle with Fire Demon and looks through the telescope, Fire Demon will oddly look through his mouth.
- NPC Fire Demons are resistant to Fire elemental attacks.
- Fire Demon and Necromancer are the only characters in the game that have visible wings.
- Fire Demon and Necromancer are the only playable characters with wings, and they remain in the same position when climbing up surfaces via ladders and when blocking with their shields.
- Fire Demon is one of the few characters to show teeth in it’s character portrait with the others being Saracen and Skeleton
Fire Demon and Skeleton retain showing their teeth in the game unlike Saracen.
.
- Fire Demon, prior to Title Update 2 in the Xbox 360 Version of the game, had a ., in the «Armor Pierce» Elemental Infusion. He was around the range of Conehead, Royal Guard, and Gray Knight in terms of viability.
- Orange Knight and Fire Demon are the only characters in the entire game that cast full Fire Magic.
- The Fire Demon’s magic looks different from that of the Orange Knight despite the fact that they both share the same Element (Fire).

Strategy
Overview
Brute is a decent boss slayer with a good Beefy hitting ratio with his «Thorny Vines» Splash Attack. Hitting the Beefy up to knockdown. Completely identical to Snakey and Ninja in terms of viability.
Castle Crashers
Capitalize on Magic as soon as possible. Weapon choice almost doesn’t make a difference due to how fair the «Thorny Vines» Splash Attack is. Brute, as well as any boss slayer in the game, bar Fire Demon and Red Knight, truly only struggles against massive amounts of enemies or a very quick heavyweight such as in Thieves’ Forest and Wizard Castle Interior and Conehead Groom, respectively. Especially if the Brute player can not utilize Juggling at all to save his/her life.
Late game, Brute is above average. Recommended to use a Strength heavy weapon, a Magic heavy weapon, or both. Animal Orb selection does make a bit of difference. The top 3 in Piggy, Snoot, and Hawkster, will suffice.
Trivia
- The music that plays in the very first area against the Cult Minions is Second Thoughts by DavidOrr.
- The music that plays in the area near the 4 Final Bosses and while breaking one of the three purple crystals is Creepy Frog by The Behemoth.
- The music that plays during the fight against the Painter is The Show by Waterflame.
- The music that plays during the fight against the Undead Cyclops is Revenge of the Cyclops by The Behemoth.
- The music that plays during the fight against the Necromancer is Simple Sight by Real Faction.
- If you play this level with someone who already completed the game, you won’t have to fight the three bosses; you’ll go to the final boss fight and it will still count as completing the game.
Types of Combos
Compound combos, as the name suggests, are different combinations of simple combos used to create infinite juggle combos which are most commonly used for combat, or finite juggle combos, which have a more specific purpose. Levitation combos are a special kind of infinite juggle combo that are used for mobility, evasively, but can be used for showing off as well.
Infinite juggle combos are just a compound combo that can be used to trap a light enemy in an infinitely repeated sequence of itself.
Finite juggle combos are filler combos that can be used as desired in infinite juggle combos, or have their own practical use. Sometimes the button is used in finite juggle combos for special purposes, most often involving the boomerang, but sometimes it can be used for mobility or to end a juggle with the bow and arrow.
Trivia
- Brute only appears 3 times in the game, twice as a Beefy in Industrial Castle and Wizard Castle Interior, and also has a chance to be resurrected as a Skeleton in Lava World.
- Brute is the only Beefy enemy in the game to have an Animal Orb, which is Cardinal.
- On the Xbox 360, players can dress up their Avatar as the Brute by purchasing both the helmet and tunic in the Avatar Store.
- Since Brute’s starting weapon is the Dual Prong Sword, he, at Level 1, can switch to a different weapon and switch back to the Dual Prong Sword.
- Brute’s character portrait in the Steam, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch versions of Castle Crashers shows a black blotch not seen in the XBLA and PS3 versions of Castle Crashers. This is the only character portrait to have been changed, unintentionally or not.
- In older versions of the game, the Brute was lightweight instead of heavyweight. If this stayed then the Necromancer fight would be quite a lot easier on Insane Mode.
Upon Completion
When you beat the game on this mode, your character will show a golden skull instead of a white one on the selection screen.
On the grand majority of the versions of Castle Crashers, Open-Faced Gray Knight, King, Necromancer and Cult Minion are unlocked by playing specific levels on Insane Mode. The Xbox 360 version is the only version that differs from this as it offers these characters as downloadable content.

Magic
«Arrow Rain»
Element:
Max Hits: 1 per upgrade level (max 7)
Damage/Hit: Base Magic Damage x 0.5
Arrows rain down from the sky to in front of the character in sets of three. Each upgrade level adds another set of three arrows. If maxed out and spammed, the Splash can stay out for a while, hitting any enemy or boss that comes towards it. Two things to watch for when using this Splash Attack is that the delay is moderately long for an enemy to slip past it unharmed on say the Scarabs in Desert and again, the delay is long enough for an enemy to get off a hit if you don’t react in time. A total of 8 characters (including Stove Face) share the same exact Splash Attack.
«Knife»
Element:
Damage: Base Magic Damage
A spinning knife used as a Magic Projectile.
«Knife»
Element:
Damage: Base Magic Damage
A spinning knife used as an Air Projectile. An advanced use of Juggling, named Spellweaving, can use this Air Projectile for flashy techniques.
«Armor Pierce»
Element:
Damage: Base Magic Damage^2 + Base Melee Damage^2
Use / to perform. This attack pierces armor, and it deals two times normal damage. That means it deals as much damage to a Barbarian or Thief on Normal Mode as it does to a Stove Face or Cult Minion on Insane Mode.
«Dust Jump»
Element:
Damage: Base Magic Damage
Leaps up with a dust effect that damages overlapped enemies.
Trivia
- The music that plays outside of Industrial Prince’s castle is Winterbliss by cycerin. The song sounds similar to Röyksopp’s «Poor Leno» from Melody A.M.
- The music that plays inside of the castle is _-={Dark Skies}=-_ by MaestroRage.
- The music that plays during the fight against the Industrial Machine is Second Thoughts by DavidOrr.
- This level may a reference to the game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (other being the Alien Ship boss). Many of the obstacles which the players have to confront, and the overall design of the level, are very similar to the Technodrome level (stage 5) of that game. The Elemental Turret looks and behaves almost identical to the laser guns in that game. The electric barriers which turn on and off, and which you must carefully cross in between, also make an appearance. And the elevator ride looks almost identical too (although here it goes up, and in the «Turtles» game it goes down).
- It is possible to rush through the electric fence area, but with max agility and perfect timing.
- It is up to the player whether they play this or Lava World first because when you beat the Cyclops’ Fortress level you unlock Volcano Store.
- This level is one of the few levels where the works after the game patch but only in the Original versions of Castle Crashers.
- This level may be challenging for Hatty Hattington players.
- In the game on Roblox, called Tower Defense Simulator, a remix of the song Winterbliss is heard during The Frost Event called It’s Getting Frosty

Information
Background
Peasants first appear playing instruments in Barracks where the player dances until being interrupted by the slain Gray Knight in the opening sequence. Outside the castle, a couple of Peasants are seen running away from Barbarians on the Home Castle level. Next, it is assumed that the Skeletons in Lava World are resurrected Peasants that Necromancer summoned to attack the player. Later on, a couple of Peasants are seen near The Sailor and Traveling Salesman at the Dock. On the Pirate Ship level, a Peasant is seen up in the crows nest using a Telescope, the same exact one that the player previously acquired from the Industrial Castle. On the Marsh level, multiple Peasants are seen dead while the remaining ones fight alongside the player after they’ve seen the player’s courage in battle against Skeletons and Snakeys. Afterwards, a Peasant and a Civilian will watch the player fight the Corn Boss on the next level (note: you can get the peasant and civilian into the fight by standing beside them and waiting for the corn boss to pop up). Finally, after the player has killed the Evil Wizard in the Final Battle and sat through the end credits, some Peasants are seen playing instruments in the Barracks again.
The Painter
- Main article: Painter
The first door leads to the Painter’s Room. This is a very easy boss fight once you know how to beat him. What he does is to come down and paint objects onto his canvas. The drawings spring to life and will try to run into you. On touch, they will instantly cause a massive amount of damage. To fend them off, simply use ranged or careful melee attacks. Magic works to different degrees on them but is the simplest and often safest method of taking them out. You can strike the painter when he is coming down to draw onto his canvas, but leave before he finishes his painting (usually two brush strokes), because you could be hit by the painted object otherwise. Once his health is low enough, he’ll start painting two, and then three objects each time he comes down. After that, he will run around the room while calling objects into existence. These are much weaker than the previous iterations and require only one hit to vanquish which allows you to focus on the boss. He should go down fairly easy as his paintings are his only means of defense. Once he falls, he’ll cough up a load of food for you, and, if the unicorn was on the screen when he died, a new weapon will be dropped: the Unicorn Horn. After he’s done, walk up the stairs at the end and destroy the purple crystal. The big center piece is the one you want to get rid of, the rest are merely in the way. Once it’s destroyed, the game will teleport you back down and the second door will be clear. If you happen to die or just want to leave because of the low levels of the items, your progress through the boss battles will be stored. It’s also good to know that the Painter can easily be farmed for experience, gold, and a free health refill if you don’t mind the hassle.

Magic
«Arrow Rain»
Element:
Max Hits: 1 per upgrade level (max 7)
Damage/Hit: Base Magic Damage x 0.5
Arrows rain down from the sky in front of the character in groups of three. Each upgrade adds another set of three arrows, but each set of arrows can only hit the same enemy once per set. Knocks enemies over and can’t be blocked. A total of 8 characters (including Conehead) share the same exact Splash Attack.
«Bomb Toss»
Element:
Damage: Base Magic Damage + Fire Damage over Time (DoT) (Base Magic Damage x 0.3)
Bombs can be used to damage enemies and open hidden areas. If there is a crack in the wall, a bomb can be used on it. If the crack gets bigger, bombing it one or more times will reveal some sort of secret; this is applied to Magic bombs as well.
They can also be used as a Magic Projectile that will damage enemies with Fire gradually and can send them flying. Plus, almost half of the enemies in the game are weak to Fire as well. They’re also the only Magic Projectile in the game that can hit more than one enemy albeit, somewhat tricky to pull off. They have an explosion radius that will send enemies flying if they’re in the perimeter of the explosion’s effective range but aren’t hit by the actual bomb when it explodes.
Bombs do not work in watery terrain because they get absorbed by the water. This only applies to the Rapids Ride, Catfish, and Flooded Temple levels.
«Bomb Drop»
Element:
Damage: Base Magic Damage + Fire Damage over Time (DoT) (Base Magic Damage x 0.3)

They’re also the only Air Projectile in the game that can hit more than one enemy. They have an explosion radius that will send enemies flying if they’re in the perimeter of the explosion’s effective range but aren’t hit by the actual bomb when it explodes. When used in the air, it falls at a 60° angle rather than a 45° angle like most other projectiles, which only makes it more effective, because it will hit enemies that stand close to you where you can’t hit them with projectiles at Magic Jump height.
With Air Projectiles, those enemies will be no big deal at all, and that makes Spellweaving very useful for doing Insane Mode alone without taking damage at all.
In Arena, the Air Projectile version of «Bomb» is what makes Conehead, Royal Guard, Gray Knight predictably overpowered
«Armor Pierce»
Element:
