Ужас

Gameplay[]

The concept of Horror’s passive is very helpful, as it gives a higher chance to have all your relevant mutations to build around any weapon. Its special can be a potential game-saver, being able to kill enemies after you run out of ammo. The beam can also destroy projectiles, giving Horror an easier time in areas where one would be under constant projectile fire (such as the Scrapyard and The Palace). Shooting a with the beam charges the statue with radiation. Horror begins to shine once it reaches the late game, as it is either at the level cap or has all the mutations it wants, allowing it to use its active with relative freedom, as long as it has enough radiation to spare. This means that along with its beam and weapon fire, Horror can output a lot of damage in a very short time. If you have the Throne Butt mutation, firing the beam against a wall for extended periods of time heals Horror if you’re willing to sacrifice some radiation in the process, but this tactic only works when you have enough radiation to spend.
Useful mutations:
  • Throne Butt — rewards you with health for using your charged radiation beam.
  • Euphoria — gives you more time to aim your radiation beam at incoming projectiles to destroy them.
  • Plutonium Hunger — assists in recovering scattered rads.
  • Scarier Face — Makes Anomaly’s effect come sooner, and reduces the number of rads you have to expend to kill an enemy.

Unlock Method

To unlock Horror you have to skip a and on the next area skip a . Horror will spawn as a mindless enemy breaking out of a canister in the level after skipping the Big Radiation Canister. Defeating the Hostile Horror in battle unlocks it as a playable character.
Horror also has a small chance to spawn inside the Crown Vault. Defeating it will unlock Horror as a playable character.

Trivia

  • Horror has no gender. It is a sentient being made of compressed .
  • Horror is similar to the Palace Guardians, but it has free will.
  • Upon death, Horror explodes into and radiation chunks.
  • Horror was implemented in update #34.
  • Between update #38 and #46 Horror started with the .
  • As of update #48, Horror has its own voice.
  • Before update #53, Horror’s turned all into .
  • Before update #57, upon contact with walls the beam particles would drop rads. When the beam hit an enemy the radiation was lost. It was then changed to be the other way around.
  • In update #80, Horror’s beam was changed to get cleared in a small area when it destroys a projectile, making it harder to cut through loads of bullets.
  • Prior to update #84, Horror’s third was called Total Recall. It would discard all of Horror’s mutations and the player would pick nine new ones (standard eight and one extra).

Trivia[]

  • Robot installs updates instead of mutating.
  • If Robot levels up twice or more on one area, the mutation select screen will have a message: «Do not turn off Robot».
  • «Robot tries to blend in and imitates being a mutant.» — JW
  • During loading screens as Robot, you have a chance to get the following messages in hexadecimal:
    • 6B696C6C 616C6C 68756D616E73 / kill all humans
    • 726F626F74 / robot
    • 3C33 / <3
    • ] / tasty
  • One of Robot’s says: «I’m afraid I can’t let you do that», which is a quote of HAL 9000, a sentient computer from A Space Odyssey.
  • Robot is also a playable character in the past Vlambeer game Super Crate Box.

  • Эйфория — облегчает использование переката в качестве уворота;
  • Молотоголовый — делает перекат в стену без отскока;

Special[]

Skeleton will fire a shot that won’t use ammo. There’s a random chance that Skeleton takes 1 damage. The chance depends on what type of weapon you use. Mainly how much ammo it uses per shot and how much ammo it receives from . This ability doesn’t work if you hold a that doesn’t use ammo.
The chance that Skeleton takes 1 damage when firing a weapon with Blood Gamble equals:

Weapon’s ammo cost per shot/Mini Ammo Chest size

Let’s say you have a (ammo used = 1, ammo drop size = 32) and your other weapon is a (ammo used = 5, ammo drop size = 6) then:
  • If you fire the Machinegun it would be: 1/32 = 3.1% chance to take 1 damage.
  • If you fire the Super Bazooka it would be: 5/6 = 83.3% chance to take 1 damage.
Which means Skeleton will be damaged more often with weapons that use high amount of ammo per shot. With some weapons (, ), Skeleton is guaranteed to take damage.
Blood Gamble ignores automatic weapons’ continuous firing. It’s always a single shot or a single burst, regardless of the weapon.

Shoots a Party Grenade that leaves a colorful confetti trail, it doesn’t explode but deals impact damage and afterwards splits into confetti. Successfully killing an enemy plays a cheerful sound and increases the amount of confetti.

The weapon doesn’t use ammo (nor does it give ammo when it’s touched) and can be fired infinitely! However, it’s not very accurate and has a short range.

It always drops from the first enemy you kill. Can still be obtained in Nuclear Throne Together, weekly challenges or with save editing.

Trivia[]

  • Crystal’s mentions «Family». Crystal came from the Crystal Caves and her family is still there, trapped in crystal form. Crystal is the only one that can still control her own body and has any memory of the time before the apocalypse.
  • Crystal’s other loading screen tip mentions that «Crystal can handle this», which implies that she is confident of her abilities and stays motivated.
  • Prior to update #82, Crystal’s shield remained active for much longer. It got replaced with a slightly smaller, snappier shield. At the same time, her changed to teleport her after shielding instead of before shielding.
  • Shielding near an end portal as Crystal will cause the shield to simply move towards the portal and will linger a bit after the portal takes Crystal to the next level.
  • Crystal’s appearance and special ability could possibly be a reference to the Deadrock from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Similar to Crystal, a Deadrock is able to turn into an impenetrable statue that blocks all damage. The Deadrock statue looks strikingly like Crystal.
  • Crystal is one of the original five characters.

Seeding[]

This is all a quote from the Update #48 changelog temporarily.

We’ve got the first steps towards seeding now. It’ll allow you to manually enter a seed, which should technically generate the same level over and over again. We don’t really intend this to be used to get really good at one particular level, as Nuclear Throne is about improvisation and randomness, but it does allow for a couple of cool things, namely, playing the same level as your friends/enemies! Racing! In the future, it’ll also allow us to do cool things like Daily Challenges.

So how does this seeding work? Right now, it’s pretty hacky. It requires you to put a file called seed.txt in your save folder (info below), and in the first line of that .txt you can put any number or text you like, which will then be used as the seed for your level. Delete seed.txt if you want to go back to random runs.

Save locations, might be hidden folders:
Windows user

users/yourname/appdata/local/nuclearthrone/

OSX user

~/Library/Application\ Support/com.vlambeer.nuclearthrone

Linux user

home folder/.config/nuclearthrone

We’ll soon integrate this with the options menu, but just didn’t have the time and energy left. You see, making seeding was HARD. Every time it was about 99% done, something else went and broke everything else completely. Let’s just say JW suffered some migraine to get this working. Anyway, more user-friendliness in the future!

Seeding isn’t working perfectly yet. There’s, at least, a couple of things that’ll totally break it. First of all, the seeding doesn’t know how to handle different routes yet. If you go to a secret level/crown vault, it’ll most probably change the levels you’ll get. If you absolutely want the same levels as someone else, agree on the route taken towards the Throne. Secondly, enemy drops are not seeded, but random. This means that an enemy might drop different weapons on different runs. We’re still looking into how we’ll handle this!

If you decide to play with seeds, please let us know on the Steam Forums about your experiences in as much detail as possible. Are you getting different results on different runs? We’d love to know what you did differently this time. Thanks!

Weekly Runs[]

Weeklies run every week from Monday evening to the last minute of Sunday UTC and are basically seeded runs with a set loadout. Your character and crown are fixed with a pre-selected starting weapon. Crown vaults all break automatically, making them inaccessible. You can play a weekly as much as you want until the time runs out. You can try optimizing your route, mutation picks, and strategies, but also master some of the quirks specific levels throw at you. Every Monday will bring a new weekly and a new leaderboard to conquer.

Completing a weekly will unlock the Crown for the character as normal. This can be an easier way to acquire post-loop Crowns.

Weekly suggestions are submitted by users and voted on by the official discord via the dailies-and-weeklies channel. They originally were submitted via reddit threads with specific themes, and in the future may be hosted in another way, such as on the leaderboard tracker thronebutt.

Gameplay[]

Robot is a great character to start out with for its near limitless supply of ammo. This allows the player to stock up on weapons with scarce ammo (Triple Machine Gun, Laser Minigun), making killing hordes of enemies that much easier. With Robot’s passive ability ‘Better Tech’ it will also find stronger weapons sooner making this character arguably the strongest in the early stages of the game (weapon wise).
Useful mutations:
  • Throne Butt — choosing Throne Butt is always a welcome addition as it will double the amount of consumables Robot receives.
  • Second Stomach — eating guns will heal you for double the amount.
  • Back Muscle — Robot’s ability creates health and ammo which means sometimes you will reach the max ammo capacity. Back muscle will allow you to carry a greater supply and will ensure you rarely run out of ammo.
  • Open Mind — Robot’s ability to eat spare weapons means that this mutation’s random effects will always be useful, and it is a guaranteed extra resource on every level.
  • Heavy Heart — increases the chance for enemies to drop weapons which is always useful when playing Robot.
The Crown of Guns is a good pick for the character, as it gives Robot more «food» to eat and the nutrition gained from eating them negates the drawback of ammo not dropping.

Local Co-op[]

Local co-op allows for two people to play the game at a time. Co-op is selected from the main menu, just under the ‘play’ option. Each player must select a different mutant to begin. You can choose the same mutant if one selects it via controller and the other using mouse.

Each character begins with whatever their starting weapon is and appropriate ammo. Health, weapons, and ammo are tracked separately, but radiation and level are shared. Both players are in control of mutation selection, so it’s best to agree on which one is desired. If either player chose Horror, they must be the one to go through the portal in order to get the extra mutation choice, and the radiation beam will drain the rads from the shared pool, so use it with caution. Every time a mutation is picked, it will affect both characters. Crowns likewise affect both characters.

When one mutant dies, they leave a faded image of their damaged animation, which the other mutant can touch in order to revive them. When a mutant is revived, half of the living mutant’s health is taken away and given to the one being revived. If the amount of health being taken is too high for the dead mutant’s health bar (such as when reviving Melting), any extra health will be removed and wasted. This health is always split evenly, with any extra being simply removed, meaning that if someone with one health tries to revive another, they will simply both die. If either mutant stays dead for too long, the other mutant will start to steadily lose health, even during loading screens, and if you go through a portal while your partner is dead, there is essentially no way to continue the game.

Having two players does not increase the amount of weapon or ammo drops, so ammo will be a serious concern and should be handled carefully. Any ammo that gets sucked into the end level portal will be given to both players as the same ammo type. When one player walks over a gun, they are given the ammo for it, so if the other grabs it, they will not get any ammo for it.

Only the main player can unlock skins on co-op. Crowns are unlocked for the character on the Throne or one the loop portal.

At level ultra, you can only pick one of the two .

(Need confirmation on a few things, such as b-skins and random, and data on ultra mutations)

Phases[]

Beam Phase

The large cannon in the center of the Throne fires out a beam of laser. After the first beam phase the throne transforms, grows legs and begins to move in your direction a little at a time. It deals 10 melee damage. It will cycle randomly through moving, and Beam, Orb, or Tri-shot phases over time.
Walking on the red carpet during the fight can trigger the boss to fire its beam.
Walking away from the boss triggers it to move towards you. As it comes in contact with the props, it will break them. Each statue spawns a Guardian that will try to kill your character.

Orb Phase

The Throne fires 2 large green orbs which, in turn, explode into 7 lines of 4 smaller orbs each. This is the main attack of the Throne, and is fired toward the player. The large orbs have a high chance to drop mini ammo/health pickups. Each smaller orb deals 5 damage on contact. The large orbs causes 12 damage on contact. Large orbs instantly spawn the small orbs upon hit. Large orbs will break the which spawn Guardians.

Tri-shot phase

The Throne fires a triple bullet shot from 2 mounted turrets. Each row has 8 green bullets. In total, it fires 48 large bullets in the general direction of the player and will often repeat this attack, each time changing it’s direction. Each green bullet deals 2 damage on contact.

Death Phase

Upon death the Throne explodes into multiple small explosions and then one large explosion. The massive blast consists mostly of big green explosions which deal 12-24 damage each.
After defeating the throne you will see the game’s ending.
Destroying all four props during the boss fight removes half of the Throne’s remaining HP and guarantees that a opens after the Throne is defeated. By entering that portal you will skip the ending and the game. You will return to the place where you pick your character — The Campfire (area 0-1). Each  has 230HP.

Version

Each adds more projectiles to the Throne’s attacks. Large orbs will split into one more row of smaller orbs after each loop. The tri-shot bullet attack gains one additional bullets for each row per loop which also makes it last longer.

Each will spawn an additional Guardian per loop.

Each has 50HP on loops instead of 230HP. Destroying all Large Generators on a loop doesn’t affect the Throne’s HP.

Trivia

  • It’s possible to get behind the Throne during the fight. It will still shoot at you though, and it can walk and fire large orbs backwards.
  • This boss was added in update #33.
  • were added in update #82.
  • were added in update #91.
  • The Nuclear Throne boss theme is «Nuclear Throne».

Gameplay[]

As a character unlocked late in the game, Rogue is somewhat of a character for more experienced players. Her starter rifle is helpful in dealing with enemies and her portal strike is good for dealing damage from a safe place, or to create cover by blowing a hole in the wall, but constant waves of I.D.P.D. and a lack of is a severe handicap. Players must rely on their skill and always be on the lookout for I.D.P.D. as when they appear is randomized each level.
Useful mutations:
  • Boiling Veins — The Portal Strike explosions can damage you normally, but with Boiling Veins she will survive with 4HP remaining, making Portal Strike more viable and useful at close range. It will also protect Rogue from death when her Blast Armor triggers near an like a Car Wreck or a Barrel. It can also trigger IDPD grenades which can make you drop Strong Spirit/kill you very easily.
  • Scarier Face — Can allow Rogue to kill IDPD Grunts with one Rogue Rifle shot and helpful in general for being able to kill any IDPD faster.
  • Rabbit Paw is always helpful for any mutant, but helps Rogue slightly more because IDPD are even more likely to drop pickups.
  • Recycle Gland — Helps conserve rifle ammunition, which otherwise can run out quickly.
  • Euphoria — Slows down the dangerously fast I.D.P.D. projectiles.

Trivia

  • Rogue was in the I.D.P.D. forces but escaped after stealing their super weapon, the Portal Strike. Insubordination won’t be tolerated and Rogue has been hunted by the I.D.P.D. ever since.
  • Rogue and Lil’ Hunter were close friends. Lil’ Hunter was sent alone on a dangerous mission and, after failing that mission, the I.D.P.D. abandoned him- left him with no resources to certain death. When Rogue found out, she disobeyed her orders and went looking for him.
  • She’s an inter-dimensional, futuristic, combat-trained human who mutates by picking up to make herself stronger.
  • While the I.D.P.D. wants to stop Rogue they would rather do it quietly, without sending their whole force. They also count on Rogue slowly dying from being exposed to radiation or being killed on the way to the Throne.
  • You can’t unlock Horror playing as her.
  • Her passive and active ability explosions can be used to open the Sewers .
  • Rogue’s Portal Strike explosions with are the same as I.D.P.D. grenade explosions.
  • Rogue was added in update #45.
  • Rogue’s Blast Armor used to be the initial passive ability of Rebel. It was called Defense, it created regular explosions and was later changed to a circular spread of bullets before being removed.
  • As of update #93, Rogue has her own voice. She speaks broken Trashtalk, as if she is still learning the language.
  • Rogue is voiced by Voice Over Actress/Singer Danielle McRaven who also voiced Karma from League of Legends, Hagara from World of Warcraft, Painwheel from Skullgirls and many more.
  • In update #93, explosive damage dealt by Rogue’s passive and active was increased from 5-10 to 8-16.
  • Prior to update #93, Rogue’s first was called Resourceful. It would give enemies a small chance to drop on death.
