Terminus
The STEM system as it appeared in the series is composed of several bathtub-like ports called Terminus. A would-be STEM occupant will then be seated in one such port, whereupon an electrically-induced coma will knock them out and create a mental projection in their image within the connected world.
While the earlier iterations of STEM utilize physical jacks plugged into a person’s cranium to inject them into its worlds, more advanced versions of the device rely on wireless signals instead, which eliminates the need for a physical Terminus and can potentially work on a global scale.
Core
All Terminus ports are then connected to a central Core processor. This Core in itself is a biologically-living component, being comprised of a whole person or their brain, whose mental patterns are then used as a map to project a virtual world in which other plugged-in subjects can inhabit.
While MOBIUS’ initial Beacon prototype has an exposed Core (essentially Ruvik’s brain in a jar), their later revision to the system has a dedicated Core chamber complete with locks and a security terminal.
Connection
Connecting to STEM can be achieved wirelessly via specific frequencies emitted from a source, which deposits the subject into the simulated world immediately without them knowing it. Another, less speedy method is to sit in a STEM pod and be connected via an electrically-induced coma, which gives the pod occupant the sensation of them being pulled down into a large water body, where they will appear to fall before suddenly halting due to synchronization. In its earliest days, an individual must be connected physically into STEM space with a dedicated jack (see above).
Both methods have their pros and cons, as while Ruvik’s version of STEM can create instant connections over a wide area without the need for pods, the configuration is limited to simulating an individual’s immediate surroundings before slowly bending it to the creator’s will. The newer device tested by MOBIUS, while slower and a lot less comfortable jacking into, can deposit the pod occupant into any pre-programmed backdrop without hassle, thus allowing for controlled insertion and extraction if needed.
Harbinger []
Предвестники — враги, встречающиеся в The Evil Within 2 .
Personality
The Administrator values loyalty to himself and Mobius, and is willing to coerce that loyalty out of others with intimidation, manipulation, and even brainwashing. He is powerful in connections and influence, but holds very little physical power outside of STEM and relies heavily on others to do the dirty work for him. He is cold, unsympathetic, and power-hungry, as well as slightly delusional about the moral rectitude of Mobius’s goals.
Inside the STEM, he preys heavily on Kidman’s fears and vulnerabilities. He reveals himself to be a cruel and manipulative individual, harassing Kidman to complete her mission of acquiring Leslie, otherwise threatening she would die. The Administrator claimed he had plans to use the fear of STEM to advance Mobius’ control over the world in order to bring «peace» and «happiness».
In the real world, as seen in The Evil Within 2, he is underhanded and callous to the suffering of others, particularly Sebastian’s. He holds no remorse for abducting Sebastian’s daughter Lily or putting him in danger inside STEM. In fact, any person who is not directly serving a purpose to Mobius is in the way and must therefore be terminated.
During his appearances in the first game (DLCs), the Administrator is depicted as a haunting entity that serves to stalk Kidman inside STEM and ruthlessly torment her about her ensnarement with Mobius. However, his appearance in the The Evil Within 2 has lead to theories that the Administrator that Kidman faces inside of the STEM is not the real deal, but a manifestation created by Ruvik in order to manipulate Kidman to his own agenda.
Another theory goes that the Administrator seen within STEM is actually a virus designed by Mobius to test the loyalty of its agents. In the DLCs, the fake Administrator was implanted within STEM system via Kidman’s injection compound given to her at her indoctrination. Like Ruvik, the Administrator has a level of control over reality inside STEM. Another possibility is that he is a ghost within Kidman alone, as he can only be seen by her and none of the other characters. In any case he embodies what Kidman fears Mobius truly is; a shadowy and faceless organization that treats its agents as expendable pawns to reach a wicked goal.
The Evil Within
The Sentinel is encountered and must be fought at least once at the end of Chapter 6. Initially sleeping in a metal cage, the beast is roused from its nap by the sound of a metal door closing back down, and bursts from its bonds through a breakable wall and out into the nearby courtyard where it must be fought. After a brief game of cat and mouse, Sebastian deals an incapacitating shot to the creature, and hurriedly squeeze past the church gates with Joseph to move on.
However, despite having fought off the creature, Sebastian still has a problem on his hands, as Joseph, having dropped his glasses in the scuffle, cannot see anything at all. Left with no other choice, Sebastian decided to head back into the yard and retrieve the spectacles.
The Sentinel can be killed at this point, but it is optional. If Sebastian goes straight for Joseph’s glasses and back out, the yard cannot be re-entered a second time. If the creature is instead slain, it will drop a pool of 7,000 and prompts a quick one-liner from Sebastian himself.
Personality
Compared to his colleagues, Joseph is considerably more passive, observant and meticulous to a fault. He frequently takes notes whenever he sees something unusual, and would almost instantly know what notes to consult when he encounters their corresponding puzzle(s). On more than one occasion this habit of his has saved both his and Sebastian’s lives.
Joseph is kind to others but hard on himself, and he doesn’t give up on something once he has committed to it. When Sebastian looked like he was in danger of losing his badge, Joseph took the only choice he thought he had left and reported Sebastian to Internal Affairs.
Like Kidman, Joseph is steadfast and orderly yet this does not make him combative with his partner and close friend, Sebastian Castellanos who has shown flexibility in breaking the police guidelines to get results. He has shown considerable tolerance for Castellanos’ ethically-sketchy behaviour due to his past tragedies, but it was his friend’s alcoholism that finally caused Joseph to take litigation against Castellanos out of fear for his well-being. This saves both of their careers, but also puts a strain on their friendship.
Despite his noticeably more chipper personality compared to his partners, Joseph is especially vulnerable to feelings of guilt, as demonstrated when he briefly transforms and attacks his colleagues, and his descent into depression can be alarmingly fast whenever that happens. During his time within STEM, Joseph has displayed suicidal «episodes» and this becomes more apparent during his descent into a Haunted. Ruvik elaborates to Sebastian that Joseph couldn’t live with himself after what he made him do. Presumably this was attacking Kidman when he came close to fully transforming, and this exacerbated his bleak outlook of ever truly escaping.
As a Haunted, Joseph expressed a level of awareness regarding Kidman’s true goal given to her by MOBIUS despite having no possible way of holding this information. Whether this is due to the influence of Ruvik or The Administrator in Kidman’s mind is left ambiguous.
Description
The Matriarch in its full form consists of a very large humanoid body from the waist up. Its face is severely deformed, almost skeletal-looking, and its body is covered in numerous lumps and boils. A total of four weak spots are concealed by such deformations: one in its stomach, two on the shoulders, and one in its mouth. The Matriarch is firmly rooted to the ground, though it can swivel around with relative ease.
It seems to be able to excrete, or at the very least composed of psychoplasm, the same whitish sludge that forms the The Watcher, though not as viscous, since Sebastian’s movement is not hindered by it, as well as the Effigy, though not as solid. Upon being defeated, the Matriarch dissolves into a large pool of this sludge, while a small portion of it transforms back into Myra Hanson.
Gameplay
The game primarily focuses on 3 key gameplay elements:
- Survival Horror — The player must navigate through the hostile game world with limited resources. This requires the player to use their wits to survive and correctly manage their few resources as they encounter various terrors and dangers throughout the game.
- Traps and Puzzles — The player not only needs to struggle to survive, but also face dangerous traps and mechanisms. Being careless with traps can cause death. However, the player can also utilize the traps to their own advantage.
- Alternating Environments — Throughout the game, the environments may change without warning in real-time based on the player’s actions, adding more variables to the game.
While exploring, the camera is set behind the player and is able to freely move them around. However, the camera can also change views sometimes. During combat, aiming puts the camera in over-the-shoulder mode. Combat isn’t usually forced upon the player; as supplies are scarce in the game, the player can run away and hide, avoid the enemy by sneaking or performing stealth kills. The player also has access to a last resort weapon called the Agony Crossbow, capable of utilizing various bolts. The player can shoot them either at enemies or onto surfaces, setting them up as traps.
In case of inventory managing, the player can bring up a circular menu to change items/weapons anytime. At the same time, the player is also able to set the items to a designated shortcut so that they are able to quickly change items/weapons in real-time. Depending on the difficulty, the player can only carry a specified amount of items and ammunition by default, but can choose to upgrade the amount later on.
Plot
The Evil Within
Neun, along with Zehn, are encountered in Chapter 6: Losing Grip on Ourselves. As Sebastian Castellanos and Joseph Oda make their way through the mazes of graves leading to the church, the duo encountered Zehn, who is shackled to a small cage, and Neun who bursts in shortly afterwards. Both brothers must be defeated in order to progress.
The Assignment
Despite the prior defeat, Neun survived the encounter and made his way towards the church courtyard where he ran afoul of Juli Kidman and her search for Leslie Withers. Here Neun cannot be fought, and must be evaded at all costs. When Juli makes it to the gate, Neun will realize she made it past him, and angrily yanks at the bars to no avail.
The Executioner
Neun is not met directly in The Executioner, and there is no STEM chamber corresponding to him in the manor’s basement, however Zehn’s Subject Transcript implies he is present in one way or another.
The Evil Within 2
Details and more information (and corrections) needed.
In the beginning of the game, when Sebastian awakens in the Mobius facility, the Administrator appears before him, personally detailing the circumstances regarding Lily and the STEM machine. He offers Sebastian the chance to save Lily (or let her die, knowing that Sebastian will chose the former).
During the events of the game, he oversees progress of the mission from the control room, closely monitoring Kidman and her interactions with Sebastian. However, oversight is his only known involvement for the majority of the operation.
In the end of the game, as soon as the Core is retrieved from Union, the Administrator gives orders for Sebastian’s termination. He directs Kidman to call Sebastian and give him instructions on how to reinstate the Core, so that a Mobius medical team can kill Sebastian via lethal injection. Kidman refuses to comply, and The Administrator orders his men to kill her for her mutiny. Using a hidden gun under her desk, Kidman kills the two men and goes in for a kill on the Administrator, but is preoccupied by a surge of security personnel. The Administrator removes himself from range and watches as Kidman has a shootout with his guards. Kidman successfully escapes into the STEM room, where she takes out the medical team as well— but the Administrator remains calm, unaware of Myra’s plan to take down Mobius and confident that Kidman’s insurrection will be stopped by his security. Standing in the control room above her, he taunts her through the glass: lamenting of her wasted potential as a leader, questioning her motives, and assuring that her punishment «would be legendary» if she continued with her revolt to free Sebastian. He even promises to «kill her quickly» if she turns herself in.
When Kidman again bites back, the Administrator uses his phone to try and kill her via the chip implanted in her head, only to be shocked and enraged as Kidman reveals she had her chip removed three days prior. He smashes his phone and again assures her she will die for her betrayal.
The Administrator dies at the hands of Myra, who uses STEM to take down Mobius, using herself like a virus to destroy all of the Mobius operatives simultaneously via their implanted chips. The Administrator writhes in agony while bleeding out, making eye contact with Kidman in his final moments, until he succumbs to the force of the STEM connection.
Summary
Ruvik was the youngest son of the Victoriano Family. Despite his genius intellect, he had a disturbed mind, his sister Laura was the only person he had shown any sign of connection and love. During a fire, Laura died and Ruvik’s body was disfigured by the fire, this event, and his father’s abuse, eventually turned Ruvik completely insane, to the point that he murdered his parents in order to further boost his research about the human psyche, with the goal to create a perfect world inside his mind through the STEM project.
At some point, Ruvik started working along with the organization MOBIUS, but was betrayed and used as a test subject to the STEM, his body was almost completely destroyed, except his still-living brain, however his consciousness was still alive and living inside the STEM’s virtual world, as a virus.
The Evil Within
Leslie is first seen sitting in the back of an ambulance with Dr. Jimenez and Juli Kidman, panicking at the bumpy ride and Dr. Jimenez is trying to comfort him. He seems to know that they are going to drive over a cliff and when they crash, he and the others are scattered.
Throughout most of the game, Leslie is only seen for a few seconds to a few minutes at a time after being found by either Sebastian, Kidman, or Dr. Jimenez before getting scared and running off again, though how he manages to survive on his own, unarmed, is unknown. Although, the fact that he may have been guided by Ruvik is possible.
There is also a short scene where Joseph and Sebastian see Kidman leading Leslie into Cedar Hill Church.
At one point, Sebastian is locked in a room after becoming infected and attacking Kidman. About a few seconds after she leaves, Leslie is heard repeating «Get it open» over and over again as he tries to get the door to Sebastian’s prison open. As soon as it’s open far enough, Leslie then starts to yell for help and takes off again apparently knowing that enemies are near.
Dr. Jimenez is the one to mention Leslie’s special connection to Ruvik, that he is the only one to survive being linked to him, so Dr. Jimenez attempts to use him to find their way back (which seems to cause Leslie extreme pain), only for it to fail, but getting the attention of Ruvik, who sends his Amalgam Alpha monster after Leslie, killing Dr. Jiminez in the process. Leslie and Sebastian are separated once more because of the beast.
Leslie is later seen with Kidman, who, knowing that Ruvik is after him, promptly tries to shoot him, and by that destroying Ruvik itself, only to be confronted by Sebastian who defends Leslie. Kidman takes a shot trying to shoot Leslie but accidentally hits Joseph.
Leslie is again seen attempting to lead Sebastian somewhere but is once again separated from him by Ruvik, then reunited with Sebastian in the STEM machine room they are all being kept in, as he is running away from Kidman. Kidman tries to reason with Sebastian, but Sebastian disagrees that Leslie should die when their predicament is Ruvik’s doing. Ruvik intervenes and Leslie gives in to his influence, allowing him to liquidate and absorb the boy’s mentality into that of his own. Leslie’s psychological self presumably ceases to exist in the real world after this point.
Leslie is last seen by Sebastian outside of STEM, walking away upright instead of his normally hunched gait. Sebastian gets another headache from what seems to be the same kind of signal he’s been hearing throughout the game and takes his eyes off of Leslie for a moment. When he looks back up, he seems to have disappeared. Though Leslie’s fate remains unknown, it is heavily implied that Ruvik has taken possession of his mind as means of escaping STEM.
Gameplay
The Quell makes its first appearance in the sewers ofKrimson Subway throughout Chapter 14: Ulterior Motives, where it is seen on several occasions sneaking up on unwary AlterEgos, though it tends to stay hidden in the background. It isn’t after until the dark, gunk-mired corridor with iron grating before the final fenced off operation area in the sewers that the creature finally decides to reveal itself, initially masking as the crank generator used to power up the exit elevator, the creature remains hidden until Sebastian Castellanos comes over to restart the device, at which point it reveals its true form and tossing the detective down into a nearby pit where it is fought.
Damaging the creature enough will make it cloak and hide somewhere to lure Sebastian towards it, at which point it will seize him and attempt to perform an instant-kill move. Though invisible, the creature’s location can be pinpointed with its hissing and the drool that constantly drips from its mouth. During this phase, the Quell may also release writhing slug-like spawns that hone in on Sebastian and implode, causing much damage and potentially knocking him down.
Strategy
- During the tunnel encounter right before the actual fight, the Quell will be waiting for Sebastian in one of the holes above him. Walking underneath its roost will cause it to grab Sebastian and initiate a quick-time event. Alternatively it could be shot to scare away, as its head is plainly visible if one looks up.
- The Quell cannot catch the player with its sliding attack if they circle strafe in place.
- The Quell is vulnerable to being frozen via , which can be used to allow the player to line up some shots with powerful weapons like the Magnum or Sniper Rifle, or tag it with an Explosive Bolt.
- During its cloaked phase, the Quell will constantly hiss and excrete its slime, letting observant players know where it is. The larval spawns it creates can also be used to track it down, as all it does while invisible is generating them and waiting for Sebastian to come in range.
- As such, the larval spawns can be farmed indefinitely for ammo and other supplies.
- The Quell will start spawning the first batch of larvae before it leaps away to hide. Shooting these while they are being spawned will deal damage to the parent creature.
Biography
The Evil Within: The Assignment
Chapter 1: An Oath
After Kidman wakes up in STEM, Shade is seen stalking her in the hallway but she fails to notice until it quickly runs away. As she makes her way through MOBIUS, the corpses of agents can be seen everywhere, presumably murdered by Shade. One is alive and boarded inside a room but becomes terrified of Kidman’s flashlight, traumatised by seeing Shade kill his colleagues, however before Kidman can reach him he is murdered by the light woman with only his lower torso left.
Kidman hides in a locker from a Haunted who is about to kill her but Shade devours him before he can. It almost finds Kidman but a noise distracts it and leaves her in the locker.
Shade barges into a room that Kidman is in after the electricity mysteriously goes out. It unsuccessfully scours the area but she is able to hides from it and watches Shade use its light to make a door appear and go through it, leaving Kidman behind.
Whilst Kidman attempts to catch up to her fellow detectives via an elevator, the power is cut and being automatically restored. However, this is slow and Shade is hunting for her. Using the circuit breakers for cover, electricity is brought back and the elevator appears, allowing Kidman to escape.
Chapter 2: Crossing Paths
Travailing through a pipe, Shade spots Kidman but does not attack. However, when Kidman falls down a hole and is caught underneath two concrete walls Shade begins transforming Haunted corpses into Cadavers and they attack in droves. Kidman is able to defend herself with a gun and weakens Shade by shooting her in the spotlight.
The Evil Within: The Consequence
Chapter 3: Illusions
Shade is first seen when Juli goes to the locker area of Safe Haven. There is a table with the black cat sitting on it with a record player playing classical violin music, right next to it Shade, she is turned away from Juli, she is on her knees and shivering. When Juli gets close to her you hear her laugh and she turns around shining her light at Juli. When the screen turns white you hear her say «Kidman» as opposed to Leslie.
Shade reappears in the dark as Juli searches for the generator to power the lights. It is encountered sitting at the back of a room at the end of the hall, motionless, its light flickering at the wall. Its light reveals a hidden door on the wall. But as soon as Juli opens it, Shade comes to life, chasing Juli through a few rooms before being lost when Juli enters a vent. From behind the wall next to the vent, Shade can still be heard calling Leslie’s name. Almost immediately after Juli exits the vent, Shade returns, pursuing her through one last room before being left behind by the elevator. As Juli escapes, Shade punches through the elevator’s roof with a high-heeled shoe.
At the end of the chapter, Juli is transported to a dark hall after making her way through the rubble of the city. At the end of the hall, Shade appears, swinging her light around wildly and screaming. With her handgun, Juli shoots Shade’s light, shattering it and rendering the creature temporarily blind. After a while, the light turns back on, and Juli must shoot the light one more time, which kills Shade and sends her light rolling away. Juli approaches the now defeated Shade and says «Did Ruvik send you? Well I hope he gets the message.» She then smashes the light by stomping on it, finishing Shade off.
Trivia
- Anima’s design was seemingly inspired by the Japanese Onryō
She has several similarities to Laura. Both are female creatures with long hair obscuring their faces, that are capable of rapid teleportation and instantly killing the player with a grab attack.
.
- All of Anima’s encounters are optional, and she will not manifest in Union until the player has encountered her at least once. It is possible to skip one of the encounters and trigger another elsewhere.
- The random encounters with Anima are very similar to Ruvik’s encounters during Chapter 9
A key difference in their encounters however is that Ruvik will usually always know where Sebastian is, and can teleport to get closer to, or even in front of Sebastian, and will usually persist on the map until he simply «times out» and disappears. Whereas in Anima encounters, the specter is usually limited to wandering within a very small zone and can be evaded by simply moving outside of her radius.
of the first game, in which Ruvik will randomly appear and hunt down the player. Both are invulnerable to damage and the beginning of their encounter will start with the screen taking on a blue hue.
- The name «Anima» is most likely derived from one of the two Jungian anthropomorphic archetypes called the «anima» and «animus» based on Carl Jung’s school of psychology. The anima is said to represent the feminine inner personality of a man, while the animus represents the masculine inner personality of a woman. The anima has been said to manifest by appearing in a man’s dreams, influencing his interactions and attitude towards women. Sebastian’s guilt over the events in STEM in The Evil Within and his confronting them in The Evil Within 2 by way of his encounters with the Anima — and her subsequent disappearance afterward — appropriately reflect many real-life concepts surrounding the subject of the anima.
- It is unclear if Anima would look the same way to all of her victims, or if her witnessed appearance is specific to Sebastian alone. The residual memory in the garage of the North Safe House seems to suggest that the sound of her singing is the same for everybody, however.
