Seasonal Expressions and Friend Actions

Seasonal Expressions change with every season. While actual seasons will never repeat, the Seasonal Spirits and their Expressions will eventually return one by one as Traveling Spirits.

As of the July 2021 update to the game, all base-level seasonal expressions are available to collect in each Realm. A player will still have to wait for the Seasonal Spirits to return as Traveling Spirits in order to collect their expression upgrades or cosmetics.

Season of Gratitude (Summer 2019)

The live version was the first season in which stances were part of Seasonal Spirit Expressions, which includes the Sassy stance. However, the beta/spring version lacks the spirit for it.

Season of Lightseekers (Autumn 2019)

This was the first season in which Friend Actions were part of the Seasonal Spirit Expressions. Upgraded Piggyback and Upgraded Double-five are Friend Actions in the Friend Menu rather than Expressions in the Expressions Menu.

Upgraded Hair Tousle is a Friend Action (in the Friend Menu) rather than Expression in the Expressions Menu.

Season of Rhythm (Winter 2019-20)

The Spirits in this Season originally appeared in the Beta and Limited Live versions of the game in Winter 2018. It was the first Seasonal Event that thatgamecompany experimented with. It then came to the Global Live (on iOS) version of the game in Winter 2019-20.

The Seasonal Update added the Forgotten Ark area in the Golden Wasteland.

The Seasonal Update added the Sanctuary Islands in Daylight Prairie.

Eden Lock and Timed Reset

  • Once you enter the final area of the Eye of Eden (past the point of no return), you are forced to complete it. If you crash or quit while in the area, and then return to Home, it will be dark, the Realm Portals will be inactive, and your only option will be to resume Eye of Eden through the Return Shrine, or being instantly teleported into Storm Lock upon entering the Eden portal, which is kept active.
  • Currently, Eye of Eden Statues reset at 12:00 am USA Pacific Time (UTC-7) Sunday morning. You can only deposit Winged Light at a specific Statue once per reset. For any Statue that you have deposited a Winged Light at, you will have to wait until after 12:00 am Pacific Time the following Sunday before you can place Winged Light at the Statue again. This means two things:
    • You can revisit Eye of Eden multiple times during the week and collect previously missed Statues. If you purchased Wing Buffs, you will have more Winged Light at your disposal (to lose and to place). In this way you can maximize your Ascended Candle reward for the week by visiting multiple times and reaching every Statue. If you have already given winged light to a statue in the same week in a previous run, the statue will not appear.
    • You can potentially cross the point of no return and be forced to give up all of your Winged Light if the timing is off. Be careful to remember when the last time you went to the Eye of Eden was, and how many Statues you may have available to gift Winged Light to.

Note: There can be some confusion as to what day of the week «midnight» falls on. Eden reset is Sunday at 12:00 am Pacific Time, which is Sunday morning in the USA. This means reset is Sunday morning or day for most of the world.

Collectables

Daily Quests

Collect Seasonal Candles throughout the Season to trade with the new spirits for their cosmetics.

The Rose Guide at Home will offer players four Daily Quests to complete every day. Players will earn one seasonal candle per quest completed. Each day the quest giver stands next to a realm’s portal, indicating where the day’s daily quests may be completed. The chosen realm will also contain four bunches of Seasonal Candles. If players gather the light from all four bunches, they will be able to forge one extra Seasonal Candle. Players who have the Adventure Pass can also claim a Seasonal Candle at Home as a free daily bonus.

Seasonal Candle Bunch locations

This season, the candle bunches are found towards the beginning of each realm again.

  • Daylight Prairie: 1 in the Social Space, and 3 in Butterfly Fields
  • Hidden Forest: 1 in the Social Space, and 3 in Forest’s Clearing
  • Valley of Triumph: 1 in the Social Space, and 3 around the Ice Rink
  • Golden Wasteland: 4 around the Broken Temple area

How do I change my username?

  • You do not actually have a username in Sky. Your name is not shown to any other player in the game. The only way another person will know your name is if you tell them. When a person becomes your friend, they have the option of naming you whatever they like.
  • The only username you may see is the username you use for GameCenter or GooglePlay. That username you would change on your device, but it is never seen by players in the game. How to change the username on your device is beyond the scope of this Wiki.

How do I back up or restore the game?

  • There are three ways to restore your game:
  • 1) Save your Sky ID as a recovery code. This can be found either in the in-game settings menu, or in your own device settings. Note: you should save your Sky ID for other reasons than just for recovering your account. For example, TGC will ask for your Sky ID if you win a contest so they can send your account your rewards directly.
  • 2) Link your game to a Google account. This is done in the settings menu in-game. To unlink your account, or change the one used, players will need to contact support.
  • 3) Link your game to Game Center (iOS). On iOS, you will need to sign in to Game Center on your device (in settings) and then link Sky to Game Center.
  • 4) Link your game to a Facebook account. This is done in the settings menu in-game. To unlink your account, or change the one used, press the unlink button.

Can I play on different devices with the same Game Center account?

Yes, on any mobile device (iPhone, iPad). This is the beauty of Game Center. As long as you are using Game Center on your primary device, you can log in to Game Center on any other device with your Apple ID, and your progress in Sky will be there. However, either device will need to download the music and progress each time you switch, which may potentially be time consuming.

Game Center is active on my Mac, why don’t I have the progress from my iPhone/iPad?

Apple only allows Game Center syncing on apps downloaded from the Apple Store. While the macOS version of the game is still in beta, it is downloaded direct from TGC, so it cannot have a Game Center connection.

How do I report a bug?

To report a bug, players may contact support either in-game or through TGC’s official channels. The in-game support can be found in the settings menu. When tapped, it will lead players to helpful articles and topics. After reading an article, players may initiate support contact. If the game is inaccessible, players can contact support via the thatgamecompany website. Furthermore, players can also report bugs via the official Discord Server — which is linked at the very top of this page.

New Areas

The Season of Belonging brought 5 new areas, a Butterfly Cave in Isle of Dawn, the Underground Caverns in Hidden Forest, The Temple’s Maze in Valley of Triumph, and The Archives in Vault of Knowledge.

Isle of Dawn — Butterfly Cave

The Butterfly Cave resided in Isle of Dawn, found to the right of the Isle Temple. The only route to it is the cloud tunnel to the right of the Temple. This area updated the small Winged Light cave that existed before the season, previously only holding a single Winged Light. With the introduction of Belonging, it updated the area with a 2-player door, inside having various Butterfly Pots and Light Buttons rising an elevator and opening the roof gate. This area held the Boogie Kid, where you follow their memories around the cave.

Hidden Forest — Underground Caverns

The Underground Caverns resided in Hidden Forest. You can reach it through Sunny Forest, where a hollowed tree to the left of the bridge can be seen. Two players will be required to do the ‘Stomp’ Expression, opening a trapdoor down to the Caverns. The Underground Caverns was different from all the other locations the player has seen, where they have to go underground to enter the area. This area held the Hairtousle Teen, where you follow the memories around the whole area.

Valley of Triumph — The Temple Maze

The Temple Maze resided in Valley of Triumph. You could reach this area by going to the Temple, and looking to the left of when you enter. The hole in the wall was blocked by a Spirit Gate, where during the season it required the player to have two Belonging Seasonal Spirits, but now requiring two Regular Spirits from Valley. The Sparkler Parent was found here, where you follow their memories down the dark maze.

Vault of Knowledge — The Archives

The Archives resided in Vault of Knowledge. This area could be found to the right of where you spawn upon entering the Vault Portal, however the entrance to the area is blocked by a 2-player door. Upon opening the door, the player could head down and get blocked by a Spirit Gate requiring one Regular Spirit from Vault. The Wise Grandparent could be found here, where you follow their memories through the flooded maze.

Cape Color Guide

The colors of the capes change slightly depending on the brightness of the level. The below photos were captured at Home during a sunset. All of the colors lighten a bit in bright daylight. The colors also change when the cape is draining (e.g., if you stand in the rain in Forest). You can check the effects of different lightings on the capes in the chart below.

Realm Entry Portals

Six of the seven portals at Home.

Home contains portals into every realm that you have opened in the game. The portals no longer act as a «return» portal to the last area where you visited in a realm. As of February 2020, the realm portals at Home always send the player to the Social Space/spawn point of the chosen Realm.

On the first playthrough, the player can only see the portals for realms that they have completed or are playing through. Other more experienced players seem to disappear when entering portals that the player does not have access to. The final Realm Gateway (not pictured) is present, but the door is closed.

The Sleepy Traveling Merchant’s Boat

Sleepy Traveling Merchant’s Boat

The Sleepy Traveling Merchant (also called the Sleepy Traveler and the Sleepy Merchant) appears periodically with a boat stocked with Spells, Scrolls, and Potions usually found in shops. During events, they often offer free Spells that players can use to try out the event’s items before buying them for real or game currencies.

The Sleepy Traveling Merchant was available for 26 days, to raise awareness of a new batch of Sky Merchandise. This Spirit is found inside a boat located just to the right of the closet/kiosk. Tapping on the shopping cart icon above the spirit’s head makes the spirit do the Telekinesis Expression which summons a Meditation Circle. Sitting down redirects the player to the ThatSkyShop.com website, an official merchandise website made by ThatGameCompany. The website is still accessible after the Sleepy Traveling Merchant’s departure.

  • Flower Hair Accessory causes the items carried on the back to flip.
  • Player can’t tap on gates and gears when strangers are standing nearby.

Additional notes

Initially when released the update was reported by players to contain major graphical issues, though it was later confirmed to affect only Android users. A small hotfix build was released for Android (149650), while iOS remained on (149601).
Despite the difference in build numbers the ability to warp to friends on different platforms would not be affected.

Eye of Eden (10)

A number of Winged Light are present in Eden, one in the first area, and the rest just before and inside the tunnel of lights. These will help you to recover from any Winged Light you lost traversing Eden. They are available to collect before the «point of no return,» i.e. before you are locked into completing Eden. The Children of Light in Eye of Eden are sitting on the ground or looking at it, unlike the others scattered in the Realms of Sky.

Finding Keys

Currently you can only get specific keys by going to certain areas that have the right notes in their background music. Often, you’ll have to wait a while for the music to quiet down before starting your practice/performance session. Below, you’ll find suggested locations for specific keys. However, these are not the only places which support a specific key of your choice, though notably the most convenient.

Here is an infographic summarising this section, made by Clement#8978 on Discord.

† Due to an ongoing bug with the player’s ability to collect Ascended Candles, the Timid Bookworm’s wing buff pricing on their first visit was reduced to zero ascended candles. All players who spent the candles on Timid Bookworm before this change were refunded. The same zero ascended candles pricing was extended to the Admiring Actor’s second visit as well.

Hidden Icons and Menus (iOS and Android)

There are a number of icons that are somewhat hidden and are not explained in the tutorial of the game.

Tapping on each of the four corners of the screen will display an icon as follows:

  • Chat (bottom left)
  • Currency Inventory (top left)
    • How many Candles, Hearts and other Currencies you have at your disposal
    • The number of Winged Light/Wing Buffs you have collected in the current playthrough (number will appear next to the Wing Meter). Note: This number may not automatically update. You will have to tap the top-left corner multiple times for the counter to display the true number of Wings you have, if you have a bunch
  • Photo and video capture (bottom right)
    • Using these rather than the device’s screen capture or screen record eliminates all of the chat, buttons, and menus from your recording or picture (iOS). This is how to take beautiful, clean pictures or video in the game
    • The video capture has a maximum capture time of around four minutes
    • Pictures are stored in your Photos app as long as you have granted Sky permission to access your photos. If you are not seeing your screen captures in the Photos app, go to your device settings, scroll down to «Sky,» tap on «Photos» and make sure that «Add Photos Only» is selected.
  • Gear Menu (top right)

Friend Constellations

An example of a Friend Constellation

A player’s friend list resides in the Friend Constellations at the Constellation Table. Friends are stored as stars in these constellations – which may change appearance throughout the day. «Favorite» Friends will appear in the main Constellation in the center. There is a display limit of 72 for the constellations, but there is no limit to the number of friends you can make. For those with a full field of friends, the constellations can take up several pages in the Constellation Table, and not all friends are present. «Favoriting» a friend will usually lock them into the Friend Constellation. However, less active players cycle in and out.

In the Friend Constellation, the player can:

  • Collect and send Heart Fragments/Gifts of Light
  • Collect and send Hearts Gifts
  • Teleport to the location of friends, that are online

To interact with friends via the Constellations, tap on the name of a friend to collect a Gift of Light and to view the Friend Menu as well as the avatar of a friend.

Hearts

A Heart appears next to a friend’s name if the player has received a Heart Gift from that friend. To collect the Heart Gift, tap the friend’s star and wait for their avatar to appear. Then, tap the Gift envelope in the menu.

Upgrading Expressions

Most Expressions (not Stances or Voices) in the menu are upgradable. Expression upgrades are purchased through the Spirit Shops of the Ancestor Spirits. There can be accessed in three ways:

  • The final temple at the end of the Spirit’s realm. Note that only Spirit Shops pertaining to that particular realm are available.
  • The Spirit’s stone in the Rest Area (Social Space) of that Realm.
  • The Constellation Table in Home Space under the appropriate constellation (e.g. Isle Spirits/Expressions located in the Isle constellation).

Once you have purchased an upgrade, a number dots will appear above the Expression in your menu. Tap the Expression icon once to perform the basic action. Tap and hold it until the second dot highlights, then let go, to perform the upgrade. Hold even longer before letting go to perform the third, fourth, etc., once you have purchased them.

Most action Expressions that you collect have upgrades. Voices and standing postures do not have upgrades. Hide and Seek and High (Raised) Candle do not have upgrades. Cry and Wave have six variations (the basic and five upgrades). The rest have four variations (the basic and three upgrades).

Sky- Children of the Light — Emotes (Live 0.5.8)

General Gameplay

Why can’t I see people’s chat? Why do I just see «……..»?

Please see the Making Friends page for an explanation of chat. In brief, chat is an action that you unlock with a friend. Unless you are at a chat bench or chat table, you will not see chat text for any player that you have not unlocked it with. Instead you will see «………». Becoming friends through a QR code will automatically unlock chat for free. Chat will be able to be unlocked from the ‘hug’ emote with your friends.

Some players have Headphones on. How does that work?

In the iOS version of Sky, players which are listening to any kind of audio from outside the game while playing will have Headphones in-game. Spotify, Apple music and such. This will also mute the in-game music, but not other SFX. As of yet, this feature has not been implemented in the Android version of the game.

How are some players so small or tall? How do I change the size of my character?

  • There are three ways to change your height in Sky:
    • There is a spell (the Shrink potion) that you can collect by purchasing Blessings in the Ancestor Spirit Shops. While blessings are given randomly, the Shrink potion will make your character baby/Chibi sized for 10 minutes. It can be acquired through both 1-Candle Blessings and 5-Candle Blessings.
    • There is a mask (the Chibi mask) that you can purchase from the Spirit Shop of the Hide and Seek Ancestor Spirit in Hidden Forest. The Chibi Mask costs 20 hearts. For as long as you are wearing this mask, you have the effect of a Shrink potion indefinitely. The mask has the same effect on all players, no matter the characters height under it. It cannot be stacked with other masks, however.
    • The last and most versatile way to affect the height of the Player’s Avatar is the Permanent Resize spell — which will randomly cause your character to become taller or shorter. To change height again, the player will need to use another Resize spell. However, the next spell will also be random. So far, there are 13 possible heights achievable using the resize spell, but it is not possible to reach Chibi height this way. The spell can be bought in the Forgotten Ark spell shop or acquire randomly when purchasing a 5-candle Blessing or can be sometimes bought from the Sleepy Traveller’s boat.

How do I meditate? Where is the «meditate» emote?

Meditate is simply sitting when you are prompted to, as you do at the end of every Realm to watch the cutscene that opens the door to the next level. For the daily quests, you have to find the specific Shrine indicated by the Questgiver in Home. See Message Candle Spots for a guide. There is a glowing circle of light with a «sit» prompt. This quest is completed by leaving a message at the shrine, like with candle spots.

How do I rescue a Manta from Darkness?

Mantas are one of the light Creatures in Sky – the white ray-like flying creatures seen in the skies of Prairie and Valley. The only way to complete the quest of «Saving a Manta from Darkness» lies in the Boneyard of Hidden Forest. Below the small Temple entrance into the last area, and off to the right side (below the exit from Sunny Forest) there are Mantas covered in Darkness plants. Burning away this Darkness will complete the Quest. However, other players may get to them before you. Thus, players may need to go home and return several times. For a video guide, see Quests and Seasonal Quests.

When I try to go to Eye of Eden it says I am not strong enough. What does that mean?

To enter Eden, players must have acquired at least 20 Winged Light through either Wing Buffs or Children of Light. Though, it is recommended that players bring at least 50-60 Winged Light. See the Eye of Eden (Spoiler Warning!) page for detailed information. Note: this page will contain spoilers for the end of the game.

Do you have to spend real money to play this game?

No, you do not have to spend money to play the game. You do have to spend money if you want to collect every item available during an ongoing Season – since about half are exclusive to Adventure-Pass holders. Though, long term free-players can collect those through Traveling Spirits without spending any money. It will be slow going, but it can be done.

Section 1: Wind and Rocks

Eagle eye’s view, be cautious while flying in Eden

A map of Eden, made by Ezpz2020

This is the most recently added section of the Realm, and adds a scenic (if windy) trek up the mountain before entering the familiar hallway that leads to the older version of Eden. This is the safest and easiest part of the Realm, and gives you an idea of some of the strategy that will be used later on. It is always advised to play with sound on in Eden, as it will give players specific cues.
There are several shortcuts to take here, though one of them is only possible for truly accomplished fliers.

Shortcut 1: Go down to the floor of the first area, above which the rocks will be flying. By crossing over to the other side, players will find a climbable ledge. If ascended, players will find themselves past the streaming rocks – almost at the first lantern. See the «Suggested Route» Map under Other Resources below.

Shortcut 2 (five Wedges minimum): Truly daring players can use the powerful wind to fly directly up towards the entrance into the next section, where a Child of Light is standing. This is done by first activating open-winged flight at takeoff, flying against the wind in a diagonal manner, and letting the wind push the avatar back to land at the target location. However, this shortcut takes a huge amount of practice to master even for very experienced players. There are guide videos to find on Youtube.
