Events in Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number[]

The Janitors are the ones leaving messages on Jake and Richter’s answering machines, although neither of them discover this.

Regardless of their fate in the first game, they will be alive, implying that Biker sparing them is the canon choice.

July 28th, 1990 (Release)

The Janitors reappear a year later in Release, where they visit Richter in jail who doesn’t remember them. They say that they came to tie loose ends and wanted to see him one last time, and leave before Richter is confronted by a murderous prisoner (bearing a «50» tattoo) and eventually a riot. They have also changed their look by dyeing their hair and growing their beards, and wear regular clothes instead of their janitor suits.

The Janitors’ dialogue is a continued fourth wall break about the nature of the sequel, explaining that they’re «tying up some loose ends» and that it «seems like it wasn’t really necessary» and that «we didn’t expect you to » but that «you’ll figure it out.»

Their fate remains unclear, but they are likely alive, being aware of the ensuing nuclear conflict between the United States and Russia. Whether or not they were killed in one of the several nuclear blasts that occurred is unknown.

Origin[]

The 50 Blessings organization was possibly founded by the Colonel while or shortly after serving in Hawaii, where he commands a small unit of Special Forces, of which Beard and Jacket are members. On October 25th, 1985, he becomes disillusioned with the war and seems resigned to a useless role as Lt. General in the post war bureaucracy. He also has made the 50 Blessings tag symbol out of a turtle’s corpse. On October 30th, he gets drunk and wears a skinned panther face as a mask, telling his unit that all humans are violent and animalistic, ordered by forces they cannot comprehend to behave entirely on instinct (hence the animal masks motif and the organization’s M.O. of anonymous calls).

The Colonel was fond of coded sentences and had his operatives use them extensively to communicate with each other by walkie talkie; those two characteristics can again be found in 50 Blessings’ organization, and the walkie talkie usage is emulated by the Fans in Death Wish.

It is implied that the Colonel assassinated both the US and the Russian presidents on December 28th, 1991, sparking an international conflict in the process. Their headquarters in Miami is shown to be lead lined with a large vault door, implying they intended to survive the nuclear war in that location (if not also several others nationwide). If any operatives or members of the leadership survived, it is not shown.

Bosses[]

As well as the Fans all being playable characters, they are also the final bosses in Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, as well as the final bosses of the entire series. They appear in the final level of the game, Apocalypse, where they are all fought as monstrous, anthropomorphic beasts corresponding with each of the Fan’s masks. The order in which they are all fought also directly mirrors their order of appearances in Death Wish (as both Death Wish and Apocalypse cover the same events but from different perspectives). Their monstrous forms are the hallucinogenic result of The Son’s overdose on his own hallucinogenic designer drug pill product.

The Bear

The first of the four final bosses. Mark appears as the form of a large bear-like creature, being roughly two times the size of a thug. Upon entering the room, the Son will see Mark supposedly devouring a mobster next to a bag of golf clubs. Mark, bellowing at the Son as he enters the room, will begin to slowly advance towards the player.

If the player gets too close to Mark, he will begin charging towards the player. Immediate contact with Mark will kill the player. Mark can only be killed with a golf club if the player runs around him and grabs one from the bag.

Mark appears to have run out of ammo by the time of this fight, leaving the Son to best him with a long reaching melee object, emphasizing his lack of range after he «burns out» when playing as him.

The Zebra

The second of the four final bosses. After being inhaled by the Son’s own dialogue-head sprite, he will appear in an empty room with several windows surrounding it and a lone Magnum in the middle of the room.

A loud, distorted whinny suddenly shatters all the windows in the room before the beast-form of Corey begins repeatedly galloping through (roll dodging) the room from each outer side, changing her entry point each time. She appears as a zebra wearing her own signature jacket with blood-red eyes. Corey can be easily dispatched by the Son with a single shot from the Magnum, where she explodes into a cloud of blood largely but not entirely covered by her Miami Dolphins jacket.

The Tiger

The third of the four final bosses. The Son walks into a long hallway which slowly transforms into a jungle-like environment, where a pile of mangled corpses of several of the Son’s men lay with a shotgun on top. At the end of the hallway lurks the incredibly large, hulking monstrosity that is Tony, who appears as an anthropomorphic tiger with muscular human arms, a black vest and a tiger’s lower torso. Tony will roar at the Son and will slowly disappear behind his lair, apparently trying to intimidate the Son.

By backing away and not charging him, the player can cause a frustrated Tony to charge and can then blast him with shotgun pellets, noticeably causing him to evaporate instead of exploding into blood, indicating Tony survived but was glanced.

Tony may also be defeated by backing away unarmed and left clicking, but it’s unknown whether or not this is a bug.

The Swans

The fourth and last of the four final bosses. Two gargoyle-like entities fly across the screen as the Son reaches the roof with a fireaxe (in a non-hallucinogenic reality, he wields a magnum). Walking up to the helipad causes the two creatures to merge and create a huge flying swan-headed hydra, representing Alex and Ash. The creature will let out a screech before attacking the player.

The head on the left is Ash while the head on the right is Alex. Alex will lunge forward at the player and attempt to lick at the player with a what appears to be a chainsaw-esque tongue, while Ash backs up Alex by spitting out fire bolts at the player. The body itself will float around above the player. Attempting to walk beyond past the monster’s body while both heads are in tact will cause Ash to bombard the player with several fire bolts, guaranteeing the death of the player. It is preferable to take out Alex first, then take out Ash, both of which only needing single swings of the fireaxe.

Destroying the two heads will cause the swan-beast’s body to explode into a huge bloody mess and ray of colors. The Son will then approach what appears to be the Rainbow Bridge to Valhalla at the edge of the building, and walk across into a rainbow void, when in reality, he is falling to his death. This will trigger the end of the game and the credits.

Members[]

Corey (Zebra)

Corey’s Roll Dodge.

The first of the playable fans. She is extremely agile and has the ability to Roll Dodge. This allows her roll and dive, becoming temporally invulnerable, rolling under gunfire, avoiding melee attacks and knocking enemies back when entering a room. Corey wears a Miami Dolphins jacket along with khaki pants and purple knee protectors.

Tony (Tiger):

His punches are lethal, but he cannot — or rather, doesn’t want to — use any weapons other than his fists. He is able to kill fat enemies by first knocking to the floor and then performing a ground execution, as well as being able to catch dogs mid lunge, albeit with a protracted execution animation. He wears a black t-shirt along with tan body armor, knee pads, and cowboy boots. His mask consists of nature’s «danger» colors, red and orange, and may have been a pillaged mask from the first game’s «Tension» chapter.

Alex (#1) and Ash (#2) (Swans):

Sister and brother, respectively; she uses a chainsaw while he uses firearms. The player controls Alex while Ash (ideally) follows close behind, and both characters’ attacks are in complete control. They wear green football padding as body armor (with orange shoulder pads for Ash) and Alex wears an orange backpack. Alex is the only one of The Fans to be seen without a mask over the course of the game; her face is a color swap of The Henchman’s girlfriend. Alex and Ash can be seen outside Jacket’s trial protesting.

Mark (Bear):

Starts with a pair of MP5s. He is able to aim in separate directions by holding down the right mouse button (holding down just the right mouse button will spread the guns horizontally, while holding down the right mouse button and left shift will spread the guns vertically), and has a full magazine of ammo for each gun in reserve. After his ammunition is depleted, he mounts his firearms on his back and reverts to using other weapons normally, effectively giving him a quick-burnout mechanic. He wears a blue shirt and a teal kevlar vest.

Differences with Final Game[]

There are several apparent differences in the comic in regards to the events and characters of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number:

  • In the second episode, Jake joins 50 Blessings on April 27th, 1989, and receives his mask on May 2nd, 1989. In the final game, Jake shaves his hair on April 25th during Hard News and receives a call from 50 blessings, and Jake’s reaction to the call hints that it’s not the first call he has received. He also has his Cobra mask and costume by this point.
  • Daniels bears a scar in the comic, which is not present in the final game, and doesn’t cover his face with the scarf. He is also shown with hair, while in the game his head is clean shaven.
  • The fifth episode is happening in 1987 and shows similarities with Stronghold (which happens on October 25th, 1985), when at this time the conflict was already ended and Beard had died in the bombing of San Francisco in 1986. However in the paperback edition of the comic (for now only in Italian), the date has been corrected.
  • The Fans in the first issue are shown to already be gathered and in the masks on June 23rd, 1989. They’re next seen on October 9th, 1991, patrolling the streets and killing. Much of Down Under’s dialogue implies they’re breaking into patrolling the streets and mass murdering for the first time on October 31st, 1991, in the masks under the cover of Halloween, however this is not certain.
  • Mark is wearing football pads instead of his kevlar vest, and is also depicted as the angriest in the group. In the final game, Tony and Alex are the angriest, and Mark is the most laid back. He also doesn’t use guns, preferring to use his hands just like Tony.
  • Jacket is given dialogue in the form of narration. While Jacket can talk, this isn’t ever explicitly depicted in the games.
  • Corey is seen wielding a katana, reserved only for the Son in the final game (who has the means to buy a katana and the reason to use it).
  • The Swans have their numbers on their shoulders instead of their masks.
  • Alex seems jealous of Tony because the group listens to him more. During the events of the game, the group only ever follows the Swans’ advice, except for one instance where Ash follows Corey’s advice to answer the Henchman’s phone.
  • The Fans’ attack van in the comics looks professionally painted rather than spray tagged and is clearly not a Phone Hom van.
  • The first issue takes place on July 23rd, 1989, yet refers to Assault as occurring «last week» instead of one day prior as in the game. Jacket is awaiting identification, but the police had presumably already identified him by his address during his coma (June 8th to July 21st), meaning the media would know Jacket’s name and of his involvement for a solid month prior to Showdown. The newscaster also mentions that Girlfriend was found dead in «an apartment downtown» and that the chicken masked man was responsible for her «kidnapping.»
  • Richter is never mentioned in the comic, while the media and the police blame Jacket for the death of his girlfriend, even though in-game, they arrest Richter for his crimes.

Profile[]

Description

In Hotline Miami, both of them wear green suits and caps as their uniforms, while Dennis has blonde hair of medium length, blue eyes, and a piercing in his nose. Jonatan has short brown hair, blue eyes, a mustache and a goatee, and appears to also have stubble.

In Hotline Miami 2, they both no longer wear their uniforms, but civil clothing, and have both grown their beards (especially Dennis, who now has a full beard and dyed brown hair), a reference to Wedin and Soderström whose looks changed since the creation of the first game. In Release, Dennis is carrying a large bag, and Jonatan has a backpack.

In both games, they have suspicious grins on their faces (perhaps implying knowledge about the outcome of the series) which only cease after Biker correctly guesses their Computers’ password.

Dennis with a straight face.

Jonatan with a straight face.

Personality

The Janitors like to call themselves American patriots. They are contributing to 50 Blessings’ movement of terrorism against the Russian Mafia by forcing people to commit murders. These murders are ordered via cryptic phone calls. While the patriotic motives of the Janitors can be debated as justified or not, the Janitors are clearly immoral and sociopathic. They show absolutely no remorse for pushing innocent people like Richter to commit murders. Furthermore, they are completely ungrateful to their agents, as they order most of them to be killed after they stop being useful.

The Janitors are also representations of the two creators of the games, some of their dialogue is actually the developers addressing the player. However, this type of dialogue seems to have a double meaning, as the Janitors and the developers are clearly distinct entities.

Steam.

, а также маски и оружие из Hotline Miami.

Trivia[]

  • Manny Pardo is the first player character introduced in a location they neither frequent nor live in. This trait is shared only by Evan, who is introduced in a court house.
  • The intro diner has an unused sprite of a diner table with an American flag decal.
  • Pardo’s shotgun play is likely a reference to the slow motion shotgun draw in Terminator, performed by Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) against the T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) in the club Tech Noir. The ensuing gunfight kills many bystanders.
    • «Tech Noir» is also the name of the Perturbator track over this level, and the unedited version of the song opens with a panicked Sarah Connor unknowingly telling the T-800 her location over a phone message machine, similar to how calls are received in the Hotline Miami series.
    • Sweetheart may be a reference to the fact that Sarah Connor was a visibly exhausted blonde diner waitress.
  • In the level, you can find cutouts of the characters Fish, Crystal, Eyes, Melting, and Yung Venuz from the game ‘Nuclear Throne’. Damaging all five of the cutouts with either with a melee weapon or a gun is a requirement for the NUCLEAR WASTE achievement.

Trivia[]

  • The Janitors are both based on the game’s creators — Jonatan Söderström (brown hair) and Dennis Wedin (blonde hair).
  • The only occasion The Janitors are seen not grinning is on the secret ending conversation of Resolution.
  • In Hotline Miami, their sprites as seen from the top-down view are identical — if the player chooses to kill a janitor, Dennis will always be the one killed first. It’s possible to kill Dennis and spare Jonatan but not the opposite.
  • Their names are revealed through the second game level editor.
  • Their dialogue sprites aren’t available for the level editor through conventional uses, they can be used by hacking.
  • If Biker kills Dennis, Jonatan may flip him off.

Transferring Alpha Levels to the Updated Editor[]

If you’re like everyone else that’s made a level in the alpha editor and want to port your level over to the official build of HM2, follow the steps below. Please note that this method hasn’t been extensively tested yet, and may produce unstable results. It’s highly recommended that you make a back up of your level if you haven’t already done so.

  1. Launch the game and access the editor.
  2. Create a new level without renaming anything.
  3. Save and exit the level editor. Whether you keep the game open or shut it down is optional.
  4. Navigate to \Documents\My Games\HotlineMiami2\Levels\single. You should see a single folder with a bunch of random numbers, letters, and dashes.
  5. Open this folder and copy over everything from your alpha level into the beta level folder.
  6. Next, rename your files to replace the currently existing files. Once done, access the editor and load up your game.

Trivia[]

  • Judging by the Confederate flag lying on his couch, his desire for a tattoo of «Old Dixie» and his hatred towards Russians in Wrong Number, Jake is most likely a Neo-Confederate.
  • Jake is the only 50 Blessings hitman who is shown to be a «true believer» who actually buys into their cause, unlike Biker, and Richter, who all clearly don’t believe in 50 Blessings’ cause and view it as ridiculous, but do their dirty work to avoid getting on their bad side, knowing what they’re capable of.
  • Jake has an unused bloody face sprite, sprCobraBlood, apparently intended for Withdrawal’s outro. The face is a still image without the capacity to move because he was never intended to talk in this scene. This sprite is available for use in the Level Editor, but it’s positioning is off, displacing the sprite into the lower right corner of the screen.
  • Jake gets his masks delivered from FEDUP delivery service, an obvious parody of FedEx.
  • Jake’s Irvin mask features a nail gun, implying a history in hardware. The digital comics revealed that he originally worked in a junkyard until he was fired for having a bad attitude towards his boss.
  • Jake is not Daniels, but has occasionally been confused for him by players due to their similar physique as well as the fact that Daniels wears a mask. However, there are enough differences between them physically to rectify that they are not the same person, with Daniels also having been killed in Hawaii in 1985 while staying behind with Barnes in his last moments. Barnes is also African-American, meaning it would be unlikely that Jake would be friends with him given his Neo-Confederate views, which always tend to be very racist towards African-Americans.
  • He is the only 50 Blessings Operative other than Jacket to wear more than one mask.
  • Jake has two possible cars in the game; one is a light green sedan, the other is a black truck. The truck only appears if Jake picks up the briefcase of money at the end of Act I, Scene 3: Hard News, implying that he used the stolen money to buy the truck.
  • His name is, as proven by Dennis Wedin in his AMA, half a reference to his favorite professional wrestler Jake «The Snake» Roberts and half a reference to a friend of his named Jake the Snake.
  • Jake’s snake mask could be a reference to the Gadsden flag, showing a snake with the words «Don’t tread on me.»
  • Jake appears to have been trained in Karate, according to the game files at least.
  • Jake’s expositional role paints a portrait of Hotline Miami fans who didn’t understand 50 Blessings were behind the calls, insinuating those players just wanted to kill Russians.
  • Jake’s apartment theme is a slowed down version of the last minute of «Simma Hem» by Riddarna.
  • In the Level Editor, there is an unused sprite of Jake wielding a single MP5. In the game itself, Jake is never able to pick up or use an MP5, as it is never used by the Russian Mafia, and does not spawn on his levels.
  • The Dallas mask is unlocked after beating Jake’s final level, meaning it would only be usable on a replay.
