Information
Initially intended as an art book, the project gathered so much material that Ubiworkshop decided to expand it into an encyclopedia.
Artists like Craig Mullins, Tavis Coburn, 123Klan, Gabz, James NG, David Alvarez and many others were given free reign to draw an Assassin from the period and style of their choice, of which the artworks were included in the Encyclopedia. There was also a «cartes blanches» section that featured artwork by other professional artists and fans of the series.
A Black Edition was released with the Animus Edition of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.
A White Edition was released through UbiWorkshop and with the Ultimate Edition of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.
A Second Edition was released in October 2012 to coincide with the release of Assassin’s Creed III. The Second Edition features 120 new pages of content that include information on Assassin’s Creed III, Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation and Assassin’s Creed: The Chain along with new cartes blanches.
A Third Edition was released in October 2013 to coincide with the release of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. The Third Edition contains over 390 pages of content revised and updated with information from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed: Brahman.

- The background of the game’s title menu cycles between the blue of Abstergo’s Animus (1.28), and the white of the Assassins’ Animus 2.0 if the specific menu is highlighted.
- In the multiplayer mode, despite all the characters being Templars and using Abstergo’s Animi 1.28, the desynchronization animation and the blend animation are from the Animus 2.0.
- Nolan North, the voice actor of Desmond Miles, had admitted to be working on a new Assassin’s Creed game before any official announcement, and game developers said that his story would «take an interesting turn.»
- The covers of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game show Ezio with dual Hidden Blades in an «X» pointing upwards, while on the PC version cover, the blades are facing downwards.
- The PC version of Brotherhood can be played on three monitors.
- On the cover Ezio can be seen wearing identical bracers, whereas in the game they are not.

Assassination techniques
Hidden Blade
Altaïr’s codex on Hidden Blade assassinations
The first recorded use of the Hidden Blade was dated from the 5th century BCE, when Darius used it to assassinate King Xerxes I in Persia. Centuries later, his hidden blade was given to Aya by Cleopatra to aid in their quest to take down the Order of the Ancients. Aya would gift it to her husband, Bayek, who would first use it against Eudoros, a member of the Order. The use of the Hidden Blade would come to define both the Hidden Ones and their later incarnation, so great was their usage.
Levantine Assassins Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad and Malik Al-Sayf worked to improve the methods of assassination using the Blade, three of which Altaïr documented in his codex: «from on high, from ledges, and from hiding places«. These would later be dubbed «air assassinations» «ledge assassinations» and «hidden assassinations». Altaïr himself described these methods as basic, though critical. In the same codex page, he introduced another improvement: the addition of a second identical Hidden Blade for the Assassins that needed to dispatch two targets at once. This method was called a «double assassination». All of these were taught to Assassin recruits and became recognizable to Templars.
Poison
A slower method of assassination, but still widely used, was poisoning, which allowed elimination of targets without the use of force. Babylonian assassin Iltani used poison against Alexander the Great in her quest to retrieve his Staff of Eden and Hidden One Amunet gave Cleopatra a vial of poison she used for her suicide.
Altaïr’s codex on poisons
At some point before 1191, the use of poison was forbidden among the Levantine Brotherhood, and it was not before Altaïr became a mentor that the prohibition was lifted. In his codex, Altaïr reserved a section for instruction on how to construct an alteration to the Hidden Blade that allowed poisoning of targets, as well as instructions on how to distill the poison.
Poison also allows for many different approaches in an assassination. The method used in Margaret of York’s death, for example, was to separate the compounds of the poison into harmless ingredients which were admnistered through her food, makeup and pillow. Queen Isabella I of Castile was slowly poisoned through her food until she succumbed.Black Cross Albert Bolden used a Templar pin with two types of poison, one that killed instantly and another that took one hour for its effect to take hold.
The Assassins and Templars made ample use of poison darts in their arsenal, regardless of the method of delivery: Aveline de Grandpré used both a blowpipe and a modified parasol, Colonial Templar Shay Cormac used an air rifle, French Assassin Arno Dorian used the Phantom Blade and the Frye twins used their Assassin Gauntlets.
Development
Ubisoft Quebec handled Syndicate’s lead development, in conjunction with eight other studios from Montreal, Singapore, Annecy, Montpellier, Chengdu, Shanghai, Kiev and Reflections. Teams from Ubisoft Sofia, Barcelona and Toronto were also involved in the game’s completion.
Having gained solid brand experience from their contributions to previous entries in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Ubisoft Quebec reportedly worked on Syndicate for more than two years. They collaborated closely with Ubisoft Montreal, whose significant contributions to the game include producing London’s landmarks, creating «living and breathing» crowds and improving the parkour gameplay’s smoothness.
Ubisoft Singapore, who pioneered the naval gameplay seen in Assassin’s Creed III and subsequent entries, as well Assassin’s Creed: Unity‘s time anomalies, focused on new gameplay along the River Thames. Ubisoft Annecy was responsible for the development of the dynamic Train Hideout, a mobile headquarters for the Assassins around which several side missions centered on. These missions featured a strong narrative that enriched Syndicate’s «gang fantasy».
One of the game’s boroughs, Whitechapel, was developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, who also worked on side missions related to historical figures and specific sections within main missions. Ubisoft Reflections is a developer known for working on racing games, and was brought in to create the free roaming vehicle gameplay. Along with vehicle degradation and in-vehicle combat mechanics, Reflections also produced several side activities that involved racing with horse-drawn carriages.
Ubisoft Chengdu was responsible for a large variety of boats, environment assets and crowd animations, while Ubisoft Shanghai handled architecture and character assets. As with previous entries, Ubisoft Kiev worked on Syndicate’s PC version.
The game’s 3 hour long score was composed by Austin Wintory, intended to «evoke the prowess and sarcasm» of the game’s two heroes.

Gameplay
Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad, one of the game’s protagonists
Assassin’s Creed is a non-linear action-adventure video game, during which the player controls a 12th-century Levantine Assassin named Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad during the Third Crusade, whose life is experienced through the Animus by his 21st century descendant, Desmond Miles. The overall goal of the game is to rise through the ranks of the Assassin Order by carrying out a series of assassinations given by the leader of the Order, Al Mualim. In doing so, Altaïr travels from Masyaf to cities in the Holy Land, specifically Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus.
Upon arrival in any of the cities, Altaïr must locate an Assassins’ Bureau and discuss his tasks with the local Rafiq, an agent of the Brotherhood, gaining basic knowledge of his target. From there, it is up to Altaïr to perform additional reconnaissance via eavesdropping, interrogation, meeting with informants, and gathering important items. It is only after Altaïr has gathered enough information that he can carry out the assassination. After successfully completing an assassination, Altaïr returns to Masyaf to debrief with Al Mualim, and is subsequently rewarded with better equipment, before he is given the names of his next targets.
Between main memories, Desmond must direct Altaïr to high points in the city to further synchronize his surroundings and map out the city that Altaïr is currently located in. Other side memories include tracking and killing Templars, flag collecting, and saving citizens who are being threatened by city guards.
High vantage points allow the player to map out portions of the city
Accompanying this, Altaïr needs to carry out most of his actions without being noticed by officials. The game uses a meter dependent on social stealth to inform the player of how noticeable Altaïr is to surrounding individuals, including the guards, by changing the color and shape of the Abstergo logo; performing certain actions at certain times may or may not raise the local area’s awareness level. If an area is on high alert, indicated by the logo becoming red and the entire synchronization interface earning a red tinge and background, guards will be always vigilant and citizens will scatter in various directions in the event that the guards chase and attempt to bring down Altaïr. To reduce his notoriety, Altaïr must break the guards’ line of sight and then find a hiding place, blend in with wandering scholars, or join citizens sitting on benches.
Altaïr’s freerunning abilities allow for greater exploration
To conduct many of the assassinations and various other tasks, Altaïr is capable of both high and low profile commands, both of which affect the alertness level. Low profile commands will allow Altaïr to blend into crowds, hide, and use Altaïr’s Hidden Blade to attempt quiet and low profile assassinations. High profile commands increase alertness at a greater level and include free-running, attacking foes, and high profile assassination attempts. In the event that the player finds themself faced with multiple enemies, one can utilize Altaïr’s sword-fighting abilities to combat guards.
This game introduces air assassinations and chain-kills. To do so, one must equip the Hidden Blade, climb to the top of a short building or hang from a ledge at an appropriate point, then look back, hold the high profile button and finally, press the attack button toward the desired target while running, hanging from a ledge, performing a wall eject or remaining close to the target from a suitable height. For chain-kills, one must equip the Hidden Blade while locked onto an enemy; hold the high profile button and counter-attack them with the Blade, and while another enemy reacts in surprise or is distracted, dash forward to assassinate them in turn.
Health in Assassin’s Creed is measured as the level of synchronization between Desmond and Altaïr’s memories. Whenever Altaïr is injured, it is experienced as a deviation from the actual memory that occurred and synchronization decreases. If there is complete desynchronization, the current memory that Desmond is experiencing dematerializes and restarts at the last stable checkpoint.
Because Altaïr’s memories are rendered by the Animus software, «glitches» may often be experienced with nucleotides and error messages appearing. These glitches can be used to help identify targets and if the player reacts quickly enough, may be used to provide other vantage points during cut-scenes.

High-profile assassinations
Italian Assassin Domenico Auditore built a sanctuary beneath his villa at Monteriggioni and included seven statues to honor the memory of the Assassins «who guarded the freedom of humanity when it was most threatened«. These were the statues of Qulan Gal, Darius, Wei Yu, Amunet, Iltani and Leonius; who were thought of having performed high profile assassinations, and Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad. Accompanying the statues were seals engraved with the famed weapons. Though neither Qulan Gal nor Amunet were directly responsible for the assassinations of Genghis Khan and Cleopatra (respectively), they were involved in their deaths.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles

Background
The term assassination comes from the word assassin, which in turn comes from the Arabic word for «Hash-Smokers». Historian Shaun Hastings argued that the Hidden Ones adopted the later name of Assassins as a mark of pride. Both incarnations used contracts to outline targets, explain the reasoning for their targeting and even to specify manner of death at times.
Though precise in their methods, both sides of the Assassin-Templar War did not complete assassinations at times, due to choice or circumstance. For example, Louisiana Assassin Aveline de Grandpré spared the life of Antonio de Ulloa and Colonial Templar Shay Cormac would intercept Assassin contracts and prevent them from accomplishing their tasks. Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore prevented Templars from killing high profile people such as astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus and then-prince Suleiman I.
Plot summary
The American Assassin launching herself towards her targets
1852: The California Gold Rush. A female Assassin is pursuing John Sutter on horseback in the Great Basin Desert. Using her rope launcher, she mounts his carriage and dispatches the drivers. She informs him the Maidu want the gold he stole returned, before firing her rifle at an incoming rider.
2015: San Diego. Charlotte de la Cruz is playing this memory on her Helix, while chatting to another player. He invites her to meet, but she is creeped out that he knows that she lives in San Diego. She heads to a job application for the charity World Share, which ends with her storming off when she realizes her interviewer will probably give the position to her own daughter.
Back behind her desk at Malta Banking Corporation, Charlotte transfers ten thousand dollars to Ms. Morehead so she can pay for her daughter’s healthcare. Charlotte instantly regrets her decision, realizing she will be fired. Returning home dejected, she is shocked to see Xavier Chen and Galina Voronina standing in her apartment. However, when they introduce themselves as being from the «Brotherhood», she rejoices, explaining she knows about them after trawling conspiracy websites.
Charlotte’s attacker killed by a throwing knife
Just as she declares she will join them, a group of Templars knock at her door. Assuming they have come about the money transfer, she opens her door, enabling them to barge through. A thug grabs Charlotte, but Galina rescues her by throwing a knife through his head. She then jumps off the apartment balcony onto the next building, urging Charlotte to follow. After hesitating, Charlotte jumps…
…and wakes up greeted by a seagull. Xavier and Galina greet her, having taken her to their cell’s hideout in the Salton Sea. They introduce her to their technician Kody, who was the one who found her online, and the Animus.
The death of Bridget Bishop
They explain an Assassin named Joseph, whom they believed dead, reemerged at the Templars’ headquarters, promising to reveal the location of an object they want. Joseph messaged them, explaining that it was a ruse to draw out a top Templar in San Diego. They need Charlotte to relive her ancestor’s memories to verify what Joseph told the Templars: that the object was hidden in Salem during the witch trials.
1692: Salem Village. Charlotte is reliving the memories of Thomas Stoddard, who arrives to witness the hanging of Bridget Bishop. Stoddard walks away, and Charlotte’s attempt to intervene causes her to desynchronize. As she pukes onto the floor, Xavier and Galina argue, as the latter has decided Joseph is a traitor. Charlotte declares she is going back in.

Remastered
On January 11, 2018, Ubisoft officially announced the upcoming release of Assassin’s Creed: Rogue Remastered. Set for March 20, 2018, Rogue Remastered retouched Rogue‘s graphics for Xbox One and PS4. With Rogue originally released for Xbox 360 and PS3 and Unity for the then-next generation consoles, many players had to choose whether to play one or the other; by upgrading the game for the current systems, people who missed Rogue could play the missing sequence in the Kenway saga. The re-release included all of Rogue‘s previous downloadable content, from the bonus missions The Armor of Sir Gunn’s Quest and The Siege of Fort de Sable to the weapons packs. Exclusive to this edition were legacy outfits for Shay based on the Medjay and Hidden One Bayek of Siwa from Assassin’s Creed: Origins,Jacob Frye from Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, and Aguilar de Nerha from the movie Assassin’s Creed.
